Hi,
I'm looking for a freeware/shareware/low-cost C compiler and/or assembler
for Siemens' C166 and/or C167 microcontrollers.
Or does anyone know a commercial development package for less then 600 US
dollar ?

Does anyone have any experience (good?/bad?) on using these uC's for
time-critical embedded systems?

Many thanks.

Erwin,
please contact Rigel for a low cost tool package.

Rigel also offers an evaluation board for the C167.

The more sophisticated (and much more expensive) tools

and

You can download an evaluation versions with restricted code size.

A GNU C-compiler (max. 64KByte code) can be downloaded here:

Hope this helps
You will have a lot of fun with this microcontroller family

I have some experience using the C166 in time-critical real time systems. I
find it to be an excellent uC, with very good performance. I have only used
the Tasking C compiler, which is OK. From what I've heard, Keil has better
performance though.

I am using the HighTec development system for the 80C166/167 for almost
four years now. The compiler is based on the GNU C/C++ and the
performance is o.k.. Floating point is included but *slow*. The code
is romable, I am using the flash of the ST10 in most cases. Best thing
is the inline assembler. Interrupts are directly accessible.
