Howdy,
This is going to seem like a silly question, but I'm looking for a
Intel HEX to ASCII representation convertor. There are some programs
that show a panel of the binary with a panel next to it for the ASCII
characters (usually with the non-printable characters replaced with a
'.'), but I can't seem to find a program that will do this.

Is there some utility that will output the Intel Hex with the ASCII
side by side, or, even better, an 8051 disassembler that will output
the disassembled code with the ASCII representation in the comments,
so the reader can judge if the disassembled code might actually be
data?

Thanks,

Device Programmers will do this, and commonly they run in Demo
Mode, if the programmer itself is not found - so can be used
as simple Editor/format changers.
( eg eetools chipmax )

Some of the WEb disasms allow this, but they typ. have some length
limit on quotes.

To code such a program is easy. Intel Hex format is documented, and some
sample code can be found also.

Check file OH86_DEC.C in

You might be able to open the GIF file as a binary stream and use a
Binary2HEX utility.
You can do an internet search, this utility is quite common.

Hi,

I have been using this for quite a while, it should be more than adequate:

[If you use that other operating system you will have to install the cygwin tools first]

I recently had to find a way for a customer to look at his HEX files and
find static strings of the part number and revision of the software.

Take a look at winhex (http://www.winhex.com/). It has a lot of converters.
What I ended up doing was converting from Intel HEX to binary. From there,
the hexeditor decodes the binary into ASCII text in a column on the side.

I'm trying to figure out what in the world you guys want! Is it
just a hex editor, by any chance? You can look at GIF files as binaries
and it is displayed as Hex on the Left and ASCII interpreted on the Right
side of the screen, there are dozens of them, I have four or five, and
as well you can use DEBUG from DOS/Win95/98/etc.

To do that thru DEBUG you just write a script and port it:

C:\>debug < list.scr > outfile.txt

Or you just run debug with a catcher file:

C:\>debug file.gif > outfile.txt

and inside you display what you want with the dstart-addr end-addr
command.

So am I. First it was a "hex displayer that can show characters alongside
it".
Now, it appears to have mutated into summat to do with .GIFs.

If it's just a hex displayer thing, what's the problem with writing one's
own ? Trivial. Can do it in <15 lines of C.

From an old Mac Davis song.

If you're windows-based you can find a hex editor/ASCII viewer program
called frhed at: http://www.tu-darmstadt.de/~rkibria

rename it to .bin and search for bin2hex.exe on the web.
