Phone order. Called to ask a Q about their shipping
charges, and how to specify the crystal sizes I needed,
and by the time they were answered, the website timed
out my order, so the guy just took the order on the
phone.

They're only 3-4 hours drive away from me, so it
should've taken less than 2 days. When they re-sent
it again at 5 pm over a week later, it got here by
midday the next day via regular UPS ground.

So you're in DFW area I take it?

Cheers,
-Neil.

Wow, I just looked up these guys' location and they only live 15 minutes
away from me...driving over there sure would beat the $3 I paid for 6
.1uF caps at Radio Shack the other day... : (

BTW - they (BG) are in the *North end* (quite literally!)
of a set of suites in a common building on the West
side of fifth street.

Park in that longish/narrowish parking lot that
abuts the N-S building layout and walk to the N.
end of that looooong parking area, descend the
stairs to your left and you're there!

BTW - if own a bird that's a nice conversation
starter with the gal on the left there in the
'lobby' ... if you take notice she also has a
dog (a LARGE Lab I think it is) sleeping under
the desk ...

The gal on the right (is she's in!) is the
owner's daughter (and quite a looker too!).

Actually, there's a local store here in Austin that's
quite old ... and I mean old! The place is dusty and grey,
but the guy (owner) has a huge selection of semis, resitors,
caps, connectors, etc. When I go there and pick up a bunch
of parts, he'll just add up the major items and ignore the
remaining "fluff".

I grabbed 50 .1uf caps the other day (the small yellow ones
that are called "multilayer ceramic" I believe) at 10cents
each, and he just averaged them as a few bucks.

No PICs and the LED selection is very low though. :-(

Cheers,
-Neil.

I think I got ya beat in old stores, Pic Dude. :)

There's a local electronics store in town that has a "maestro" sticker
on the door (I think MasterCard was Meastro long ago), they also still
use a purely mechanical cash register!

Unfortunately the owner isn't as nice as yours. This guy wanted 5 bucks
for a 7448!

Actually, I think Maestro is not that old, but Mastercard's
implementation of a debit-card system. You can have your
MC "Maestro-enabled", which will deduct the charge from
your bank account automatically. A PIN # would have to be
punched in, etc.

$5 for a 7448!?!?!? Who do they think they are -- Newark!? :-)

Cheers,
-Neil.

Sorry to disapoint you again Pic Dude but Newark charges a measly $2.14
for a 7448.

I mean at that price I'd better stock up! Don't let the word out though
that newark practically giving these chips away though. ;)

Actually was referring to an issue I had with Newark's ripoff
charges. 1 sensor @$22.58 (which others sold for ~$17 but didn't
have in stock), plus one Max232 (to avoid the $5 charge for
orders below $25) came to just over $25. Add shipping, handling,
11% sales tax (note that sales tax is not 11% here in Austin,
where their TX office is, where their sales office is, nor where
they shipped it from), and insurance on the shipping (which UPS
already insures to $100). Total = $36.11.

Ouch!

Pic Dude,
You might have missed the note of sarcasim in that last
message. :) Yeah I've dealt with newark before, damn expensive.
Unless your at a university they you get a sweet deal. :) Free
shipping no mimimum order. :)

I hope you learned a good lesson from dealing with newark. They have to pay
for that fancy Fat book they call a catalog. Theres a decent store here in
the houston area. He carries a lot surplus stuff a computer parts. a few
pic items too. I just wish he was closer to my house.

Adam - you know about Tanner's on Valwood Parkway
(off I-35E) in Farmer's Branch (N of Dallas) don't
you?

I-35E to Valwood Parkway, go west on Valwood, look
for "Container Store" building - notice the traffic
light BEFORE this store and take a right at the
light - Tanner's is in this north-side strip center
kinda north and across the street from the Container
Store building.

Good selection of items - some surplus, some new
stock, lot's of chips and the like AND they also
have the GPS receivers and docs!

Rumor has it (from talking with the gal at BG) that
Tanner's and BG sometimes share stock for sale - and
with Tanner's open on weekends this can be a benefit!
