There are two fixwk4.exe programs out there, both free and available
from Lotus. I have both. One is for R4x, and the other for R5. If
you cannot find them, let me know and I'll be happy to email it. Both
are very small, under 50K.

I had someone ask me this and found the following by using the Lotus
Technical Question web page to query a possible answer. I got two answers
and one may help.

>Why do I always get a GPF when opening two large spreadsheets in Lotus 123
v1.1?

I have a link from my home page for technical questions from Lotus, you can
type a note such as the one you have in quotes and get many solutions, one of
them might be the exact one. LINK:

If you highlight the link and do an edit copy, then paste in location, you
will go directly to the Technical Question Query Database.

Here's my results to your question (two closely relate)
1.
TITLE: Using Fast Format SmartIcon Causes a GPF in MAIN123W.EXE
PRODUCT AREA: 123 for Windows
PRODUCT RELEASE: 123 Release 5 for Windows
CATEGORY: Workstation/Desktop \ General Functionality \ SmartIcons
NUMBER: 125492
LAST UPDATE: 08/05/94 01:11:21 PM
CIRCULATION: Public - Faxable
PROBLEM:
Under a certain set of circumstances, when a customer clicks the Fast
Format SmartIcon and then selects a single cell, the following error
occurs:
MAIN123W: An Error has occurred in your application. If you
choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file. If you
choose Close, your application will terminate.
If the customer selects Ignore, the error message continues to display on
the screen. When the customer selects Close, a second error occurs:
Application Error: MAIN123W Caused a General Protection Fault in
Module MAIN123W.EXE.
SOLUTION:
These errors occur when using the Fast Format icon the following
conditions:
1. The source range is 3D.
2. The cells in the source range have the same style and number
format.
3. The target range is a single cell.
This issue has been reported to Lotus Quality Assurance. The only way to
avoid the error is to eliminate one of the 3 circumstances listed above.
The exact steps to recreate this issue are as follows:
1. In a new file, enter the word test in cell A:A1.
2. Bold cell A1.
3. Insert 4 sheets.
4. Return to cell A:A1 and copy it to B:A1..E:A1.
5. Select cells A:A1..E:A1.
6. Click the Fast Format SmartIcon (the Icon has the image of a
paintbrush and a grid.)
7. Click on a cell in the worksheet, and the GPF errors occur.

2.
TITLE: "Application Error: MAIN123W.EXE Has Caused a Segment
Load Failure"
PRODUCT AREA: 123 for Windows
PRODUCT RELEASE: 123 for Windows 1.x
CATEGORY: Workstation/Desktop \ Install/Load/Run \ Issues Running
Product
NUMBER: 119721
LAST UPDATE: 10/09/95 03:30:04 PM
CIRCULATION: Public - Faxable
PROBLEM:
The customer can start 123W 1.x without a problem. When running or exiting
the program, however, one of the following errors occurs:
"Application Error: MAIN123W.EXE Has Caused a Segment Load Failure"
"Segment Load Failure"
The error may occur, for example, when the customer attempts to maximize an
untitled spreadsheet or when the customer selects File, Exit to close 123W
. When the error occurs, 123W closes and the customer is returned to the
Windows Program Manager.
SOLUTION:
Either of these errors can occur for a number of reasons.
1. The MAIN123W.EXE file has a read-only attribute.
To clear the read only attribute, type the following command from the \123W
program directory in DOS:
ATTRIB -r MAIN123W.EXE
2. The MAIN123W.EXE file is corrupted.
The customer should reinflate the MAIN123W.E!E from the 123W diskettes.
The exact steps to do this are provided in the Supporting Information
section below.
3. The error can also occur for the same reasons that an Application Error
or General Protection Fault error occurs. If the MAIN123W.EXE file is
neither assigned a read-only attribute nor corrupted, refer to the
following document for additional troubleshooting information: Application
Error: General Protection Fault" in Win 3.1.
SUPPORTING INFORMATION:
Steps to Reinflate the MAIN123W.EXE:
a. Exit Windows.
b. Place the 123W Install disk in drive A or B.
c. Change to the \123W directory in DOS.
d. Type the following command and then press Enter:
REN MAIN123W.EXE MAIN123W.OLD
e. Type the following command and then press Enter:
INFLATE A:MAIN123W.E!E C:\123W
(where A represents the letter for the diskette drive.)
f. Restart Windows and 123W.

Richard - I've been having similar problems over the years, and my
conclusion is that 123 should be designed to cope with any file that
it tries to open. I can't see any excuse for detonating Windows with
a GPF just because a byte or two are corrupt in a WK4 file. After
all we do get "not a valid worksheet file" messages now and again, so
it copes with some error conditions. But not all.
IMHO on trying to read a damaged WK? file it should read in as much as
it can before the damage, inform you of the problem, and leave you
with what it has rescued from the file.
too much to ask?
This is just the problem I came here with. I tried searching the net for
some shareware toolkit that would rummage through the corrupt file and
attempt to rewrite it without the rubbish. Unfortunatly, I couldn't
find any. I take it from your post, you didn't either. However, being
of an optimistic outlook, I thought I'd ask anyway... Do you know of any
toolkit that could do this?
Cheers,
Jack Healy.
