AI'95 is the eighth in the successful series of Australian Joint
Conferences on Artificial Intelligence. This annual event is the main
Australian AI conference, attracting many local and overseas
participants.
The theme this year is "bridging the gaps", with an emphasis on the
"gap" between AI theory and real world applications of AI, and the
"gap" between the classical symbolic approach and other subsymbolic
approaches to AI, such as neural networks, artificial life and
evolutionary computation.
AI has already changed the way that computers are used in many
application areas, ranging from intelligent internet agents to garner
information, to fuzzy controllers embedded in a washing machines. Two
current hot topics are agent-based architectures and data
mining. Historically, expert systems are the most visible of the
commercial developments to have come out of AI laboratories. Fuzzy
logic, neural networks, object-orientation, and machine learning are
just some of the others. And yet, there are still major advances being
made in these areas and in many other areas of AI research that are
now ready, or near ready, to solve real world problems.
AI'95 will showcase many of the latest developments in Artificial
Intelligence, drawing upon the tremendous expertise of both Australian
scientists and practitioners in AI, and their overseas
counterparts. Some 130 papers have been submitted to the main
conference from Australia and abroad, and with some 60 papers accepted
for oral presentation and around 30 for poster presentation, a very
high standard is assured.
AI'95 will also be the setting for a broad range of dedicated
tutorials and workshops, during the two days prior to the main
conference. International and respected specialists in Data Mining,
Knowledge-Base Management Systems, Evolutionary Computing,
Manufacturing, Finance, and Group Decision Support Systems will
present tutorials that will cover the basics and explore the
possibilities of these exciting technologies.
Workshops which allow practitioners and participants to present their
work and ideas in a less formal and more focussed session will cover
areas such as AI and the Environment, Distributed AI, Intelligent
Decision Support Systems and AI in Defence.
To focus on "bridging the gaps", a special stream presented as part of
the main conference will highlight the Real World Applications of AI.
Papers specially chosen for this stream will demonstrate how AI can
come out of the laboratory and into every day business, whether in
Government, Manufacturing, Finance, or Defence.
The program of keynote speakers for AI'95 draws upon both academic
gurus and industrial champions. Professor Kenneth De Jong from George
Mason University is an authority in evolutionary learning; Professor
William Clancey from the Institute of Research on Learning, USA, is a
well respected celebrity in AI, and will explore the relationship
between symbolic and subsymbolic reasoning. Susan Garavaglia of Dun
and Bradstreet is widely known in the Financial world for her
publications relating to the use of AI in Finance and her keynote
speeches to conferences such as "AI on Wall St".
For students of AI: A special session will provide an opportunity for
a discussion, of your own research project, with the eminent
practitioners. To participate, please submit an abstract with your
registration. Also for students, an exemption from the main conference
fee will be provided to a small team in return for work on the
conference desk. Enquire with the organisers if this interests you.
For the computing professional, the conference has received full ACS
PCP accreditation. Attendance for the full three days of the
conference will count for 18 points. Individual tutorials will count
for 3 points each, and individual workshops will count for 6 points
each.
AI'95 represents a tremendous opportunity to catch up on the latest
developments in AI and future AI research. And, perhaps most
importantly, AI'95 will highlight where AI can be applied to assist
you in meeting the complex requirements of today's and tomorrow's
data, information and knowledge processors. Come and sample the
possible solutions.
Social Events at AI'95
----------------------
The social highlight of the conference will be the conference dinner,
to be held on Thursday evening in the restaurant of the High Court of
Australia. This will be preceded by a debate on AI themes, to be held
in the Senate chamber of Old Parliament House, the Australian seat of
government until 1988.
There will be a welcome barbecue Tuesday evening.
Of special interest is a torchlight visit to Tidbinbilla nature
reserve on Wednesday evening, an opportunity to see a number of rare
Australian animals. Bookings will be taken during the conference.
About Canberra
--------------
Canberra is the capital of Australia, and the site of a number of
important Australian buildings and institutions, which are readily
accessible by car, bus or bike. It is located some 300km south of
Sydney, 800km north of Melbourne. It is well served by regular air,
rail and bus links from Sydney and Melbourne, and has daily services
to most other centres in Australia. The climate in November (late
Spring) can be fairly variable, but temperature below freezing or
above 30C are highly unlikely at that time.
