Dear fellow researchers,
would anyone like to share their experiences with a
Prof. George Lasker
U of Windsor , Canada
?
A submission of mine was accepted at the
"Intl. Conf. on Data Analysis IDA'95"
last year. I was not able to attend. Despite
some effort on my part, I have yet to recieve
any of the following:
a) a (partial) refund of $300 i paid up front
b) a copy of the proceedings
c) a reply to any of my communicative
attempts at reaching Prof. Lasker
I had sort of forgotten about the thing, but
today my mailbox contained an "invitation" to
present an "invited paper" at the followup of sorts
"8th Intl. Conf. on Systems Research, Informatics & Cybernetics"
Naturally, "all invited speakers have to register and
pay the Conference Fee [sic]".
Does anyone know this gentleman?
Has anyone ever dealt directly with him?
Has anyone ever been to any of the conferences,
which supposedly take place in Baded Baden, Germany,
every year?
thanks,
eddi

>Dear fellow researchers,
Nice, that you mention this and put this on the Net. We had must the same
experiences with this guy. I think it is good that a lot of people share
our experiences. Below are my personal feelings about this topic.
Last year I came across a call for papers for the IDA-95 conference
somewhere on the Net. I thought it would be appropriate for some papers
of our research group at ATO-DLO. Two of my colleagues went there.
It appeared a small workshop, in a very old school building, without any
organised lunches or dinners. In short, the organisation was terrible,
despite the great effort the workshop chairman,
Dr. Xiaohui Liu (h...@dcs.bbk.ac.uk) took to make something out of it.
Certainly no blame on Dr. Liu!
We also had troubles with payment. We took great effort and costs to send
bank cheques to Prof Lasker. Although that form of payment was allowed in
the registration form, we received an answer that Prof Lasker found
it too expensive to cash them. After some insisting from our side, he
finally did cash them, but it did leave a bad impression.
It is very interesting to note, that as soon as the conference date
approaches, Prof Lasker disappears from earth. leaving some (fake?) address
in Germany where you could reach him. In my opinion, he is at that time
spending a luxury holiday, paid by the conference attendants... It happened
last year, and now it seems to happen again.
We all have received the letter you mentioned, and we all were thanked for
the nice presentation we gave at the conference, although only some of us
went to Baden-Baden. So far so good, everybody uses standard letter
templates. But what is interesting, that two authors are invited for
completely different conference tracks, based on the same paper!
Also, as far as I know, invited speakers are indeed paid by the
conference, except for the Lasker-"organised" conferences.
Bye,
Mark Sloof
