REMOTE AGENT EXPERIMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
------------------------------------

May 13, 1999 -- NASA Ames Research Center

This message is to announce that on Monday, May 17th, 1999 NASA is
planning to activate the Remote Agent experiment (RAX) on board the Deep
Space 1 (DS1) spacecraft. RAX is a revolutionary experiment in
spacecraft autonomy that will demonstrate the first Artificial
Intelligence autonomous control system in the context of a real,
operational space mission.

RAX is an autonomous agent architecture comprised of three modules. The
constraint-based Planning and Scheduling system generates plans from
first principles using a temporal domain model. The Smart Executive
executes the plans allowing for local recoveries and temporal
adjustments to the actual conditions of executions. The model-based Mode
Identification and Recovery system (Livingstone) monitors the progress
of execution from abstracted sensor data, diagnoses the cause of
off-nominal behavior and suggests mode reconfigurations that are then
executed by the Smart Executive. During the experiment we will test
nominal operations and simulate faults, showing the ability of RAX to
recover without any intervention from ground controllers. Besides being
the first AI autonomous agent in space, RAX will also be the first LISP
program to control a spacecraft.

A web site is available to allow the general public to follow the
experiment as it unfolds. We are currently undergoing final
preparations to allow the public to view information coming from live
telemetry and to receive e-mail when critical events occur on the
spacecraft. The live telemetry feed and e-mail notification will be
activated following DS1 project authorization.

The Remote Agent is a collaboration between the NASA Ames Research
Center, Moffett Field, CA, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena,
California.
