From: Bob Fisher <r...@inf.ed.ac.uk>
Subject: Q&A : Large overhead camera person tracking dataset

We have been contructing a video dataset of detected people walking
through the atrium of a building, where the data comes from an overhead
camera. Because of the data volume, we are not recording the video
images, but are doing target detection on the images and save the
detection records. The records include a bounding box and a colour
histogram for each detected target. Because of lighting, camera jitter
and stationary objects, there are detections of non-people, too. After
detection, we also have applied our person tracker, recording the
trajectories as both lists of detections and splines.

By July 19, 2010, there were 29 million target detections, of which an
estimated 8.3 million were real targets, resulting in 96K observed
trajectories. And we're still acquiring data!

You might find it interesting to use the data. It's at:
http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/rbf/FORUMTRACKING/

The data was acquired in the Informatics Forum, the main building of the
School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.

By the way, there are over 120 public image and video datasets
on CVonline at:

Subject: JOB : PhD position - ECSC Asturias - Spain

Early Stage Researcher (PhD position)

A 3-year position (starting as soon as possible in summer 2010) as Early
Stage Researcher (ESR) is available to work in the Medical Imaging Using
Bio-inspired and Soft Computing (MIBISOC) European project in the
European Centre for Soft Computing located in Mieres, Asturias, Spain
( http://www.softcomputing.es/ ).

MIBISOC is a Marie Curie International Training Network granted by the
European Commission within the Seventh Framework Program (FP7
PEOPLE-ITN- 2008). The main goal of the project is to create a training
programme where 16 enrolled early-stage researchers (ESRs) will be
exposed to a wide variety of soft computing (SC) and bio-inspired
computing (BC) techniques, as well as to the challenge of applying them
to different situations and problems within the different medical
imaging (MI) stages. More information is available in
http://www.mibisoc-itn.eu .

We were looking to recruit an ESR with less than 4 years of research
experience after graduation. The selected candidate will have the
opportunity to study for a research-level degree (PhD) and work within a
highly collaborative and interdisciplinary network of leading
researchers. The call will be opened until the position is covered.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The MIBISOC network offers to the selected ESRs an intensive research
training programme between 12 participating institutions. The
successful candidate will be expected to take part actively in the
training activities organized by MIBISOC (on-line and face-to-face
courses, secondments, workshops, a final conference, etc.) and to
develop her/his research project.

RESEARCH PROJECT (PhD dissertation topic)
The selected candidate will work in one of the two following projects:

Deformable Registration of Medical Images Using Soft Computing: The
overall aim of the subproject is to investigate the use of Soft
Computing to tackle the deformable registration of medical images
following a two-stage approach. First, a rigid and affine registration
process is tackled using bio-inspired computing and different voxel
similarity measures. Then, a deformable IR method aims to refine the
results from the previous stage Genetic Fuzzy Systems and Deformable
Models for Medical Image Segmentation: This subproject aims at
investigating the use of fuzzy systems and deformable models for the
segmentation of objects of interest in medical images. Besides,
following an evolutionary learning process, we aim to customize the
latter systems to allow them to be applied to a wide branch of medical
imaging scenarios.

BENEFITS
Employment contract with full social security. The contract will be
with the European Centre for Soft Computing. The salary of the PhD
positions is set in accordance with the regulations of the Marie Curie
Initial Training Network
within the European Commission?s 7th Framework Programme, the labour laws
and regulations of the hosting institution and its country. In any
case, the gross salary will be higher than 30000 euros per year.
Additional, non-salaried, non-taxable contributions toward moving and travel
to MIBISOC activities and conferences are available from MIBISOC's
funds.

The selection of ESR followed a process based on:

Equal access opportunities between men and women
The academic and scientific skills and the relevance of their
experience with the research area
The expected impact of the proposed training on the researchers? career
The conformity with the required criteria for eligibility of the
researchers within Marie Curie Initial Training Networks.

The EU has strict eligibility criteria for ESRs:

Applicants should be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of
their research careers, including the period of research training,
starting at the date of obtaining the degree which would formally
entitle them to embark on a doctorate. Students who are completing
their master?s degree during the current semester, with the intention
of starting the doctoral position in the spring semester of 2010, are
also invited to apply. The qualifying education must be completed
before enrolment in the MIBISOC project.
The researcher shall not be a national of a State in which the
beneficiary's research team appointing her/him is located.
At the time of appointment, the researcher should not have resided or
carried out her/his main activity in the country of the beneficiary
for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to her/his
appointment
Applicants need to have a good working knowledge of English, as all
the scientific communication and the MIBISOC events will be in
English.

We particularly encourage women to apply for these positions.
Send the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
- Letter of motivation, including aptitude for pursuance of the programme
- Summary (1 page) of the most relevant previous experience (if any) in related fields
- Scanned copies of academic transcripts and degree certificates
- Proof of English proficiency (E.g. IELTS, TOEFL)
- Letters of recommendation are welcomed

EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing Special Issue on Video
Analysis for Novel TV Services

http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ivp/si/ntvs.html

CALL FOR PAPERS

The significant increase in the amount of digital video content (TV
channels, in particular) and the diversification of broadcast
possibilities and storage devices have recently given rise to the
emergence of many new services and novel TV program-consumption schemes.
These new services are basically aimed at making TV content available to
users without any constraint on location and/or time. The idea is also
to present TV programs in different ways in order to increase their
audience, automatically creating summaries, building novel browsing
models, and allowing users to perform semantic queries. Examples of such
services are TVoD, interactive TV, Network PVR, catch-up TV, start-over,
and many others.

In order to build on these services, highly time-consuming preprocessing
steps of TV content are required. TV content is generally available as
continuous streams of audio-visual frames. Useful TV programs and
interprograms (like commercials, trailers) are concatenated and
broadcasted without any precise and reliable flags that identify the
boundaries of useful segments and times of interest. Therefore, in order
to be useful, TV streams have to be macrosegmented and segments must be
classified and mined. Programs need to be described, structured,
summarized, classified following their genre and theme, indexed, stored,
and retrieved. Events of interest also need to be detected in programs.
Events may concern, for instance, goals and important actions in soccer
footage, and also each time a specific person appears on screen.

On the other hand, making use of TV program content raises important IPR
issues. Efficient techniques for copyidentification and also
watermarking are, therefore, required in order to trace the content.

The objective of this special issue is twofold. First, it aims at
highlighting the need for powerful and automatic audio and video
content-based techniques in building novel TV services. The second
objective is to present the recent advances in the field.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* TV stream structuring
* Content-based audio/video analysis of TV content
* TV program classification
* Event detection in TV streams
* Search engines for TV streams
* Program summarization
* Thematic and semantic clustering of TV programs
* Human machine interfaces for browsing and retrieving TV content
* Metadata extraction and mining from TV content
* Duplicate video detection
* Video and audio fingerprinting/watermarking

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's

should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscripts through
