PostDoc in Biomedical Image Analysis at the University of Heidelberg
The Computer Vision group at the Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image
Processing (HCI) headed by Prof. Bj�rn Ommer and the Pain Research Group
of Prof. Rohini Kuhner at the Institute of Pharmacology have a joint
opening for a fully funded PostDoc position in Biomedical Image
Analysis. The biomedical objective of the project is to investigate the
structural plasticity of nerves under the effects of pain and diseases
in in-vivo tissue. Structural changes in the organization of different
types of peripheral nerve afferents (tactile nerves, nociceptors) are
studied in the periphery (skin) after chronic nerve injury. The
biomedical basis for this investigation are models of neuropathic pain,
a variety of knockout and transgenic mice, and living tissue imaging
methods.
The main focus of the PostDoc position will be on pursuing research in
Computer Vision to develop algorithms for the underlying, high
resolution microscope imagery that is provided by biologists---i.e.
image segmentation and enhancement of the microscopic images, as well as
recognition in and registration of large numbers of 3D image stacks.
The salary is TV-L13 and the position is to be filled as soon as
possible. Ideal candidates will have an excellent PhD degree in Computer
Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related
field. They will have a strong mathematical background, solid
programming experience in C++ and MatLab, and a strong interest in
interdisciplinary research. A solid background in image analysis and
computer vision is expected and fluency in English is required (both
written and spoken). Prior experience in the biomedical foundations will
be helpful but is not mandatory since expert knowledge is already
provided by the Kuner group who are conducting the biological
experiments.

The Australian Centre for Visual Technologies (ACVT) is one of the
largest computer vision and image analysis research groups in Australia,
with expertise in video surveillance, image based modelling and video
search. Based in Adelaide, we currently number over 30 members including
academics, research staff and students, working on a mixture of "blue
sky" and commercially oriented research projects.
We seek a post-doctoral researcher to drive a 2 year project funded by
the Australian Research Council, investigating visual tracking in large
camera networks. The broad aim of this project is to explore tracking as
an optimisation problem. We have previously developed software to
discover connections between cameras in large networks, and are
interested in using these connections as constraints to track people as
they move between cameras.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant discipline with a background
in computer vision and particularly visual tracking algorithms and
discrete optimisation. We are looking for someone with experience in
C++, Python and/or Matlab. Written and oral English communication skills
are essential.
The successful applicant will need to work both individually and as a
member of a broader team, and may also have the opportunity to assist
with PhD supervision. The ACVT provides many opportunities for
collaboration within the Centre, with visitors and with international
partners. The primary output of the project will be quality
publications, but there is also scope for subsequent commercialisation.
Salary: University Level B (AU$73,228 - 86,960 depending on
qualifications), plus benefits. Funding for relocation and conference
travel is available.

growth patterns can arise from a single genome, using interdisciplinary
Systems Biology approaches and yeast as experimental model organism.
This project will investigate how the genomic network of polarity
factors regulates activation, maintenance and inactivation of polarized
growth as cells grow and divide. The project will involve extensive use
of quantitative high-content microscopy and large-scale, automated image
processing and analysis of cellular population images.

The group is now searching for prominent candidates to work as
RESEARCH ASSISTANT (DOCTORAL STUDENT)
to accomplish doctoral studies in our challenging and inspiring research
projects. The work is carried out in a team consisting of other
postgraduate students and senior researchers. The research topics are
related to face analysis, biometrics and intelligent human-computer
interaction.
The Machine Vision Group has reached outstanding results in face
recognition, recognition of facial expressions and visual speech
recognition by using Local Binary Patterns. Also, novel methods for
recognizing actions and gestures have been developed. The methodology
and its extensions are widely used and developed further within the
scientific community. The group is involved in European project
consortiums/proposals in this area.
An ideal candidate should have a completed Master degree (or equivalent
studies in a PhD program) in computer science or electrical engineering
with previous experience on computer vision. Programming skills with
C/C++/Matlab is desired. Also, good knowledge of spoken and written
English is required.
Duration of the contract is at first, one year. There is a good

software applications for clinicians and other medical professionals.
As an intern, you will join CAD's team of scientists in solving exciting
and challenging research problems with real-world medical applications.
