Here is a message from Thomas McChesney asking for a few extra hands to help:
______________________________

OK, let's try this again - without the rain.

I am going to pull weeds in the tree spaces downtown on Saturday, June 25th(belatedly) as part of the United Way Day of Action. I'll get as much done as I can between about 10 am and 3 pm. -- and I'm looking for help! Feel free to come when you can and leave when you must.

I plan on working unless is a torrential downpour. I'd like to finish this work before the soccer tournament begins next Thursday, and Saturday is one of the few work days available.

My plan is to start with the beds on 3rd Ave in front of the Huddleston Bolen offices (611 Third Ave) and move to 4th Ave at 6th St. (the City has taken care of the beds on 3rd). I'll work down 4th as far as I can go (they start looking much better as you get close to 9th St.). If there's time and interest we can also plant flowers in some of the spaces.

If we breeze through this, I'd also like to clean up the street and weeds on 3rd Ave across from the football stadium. That's the first impression our soccer guests will see next Thursday and it looks awful.

Here's how you can help:
  1. Spread the word - this'll be easy if we have volunteers but we'll barely make a dent if it's just one or two of us.
  2. HELP! Come out for a few hours on Saturday. It'll make you feel good every time you walk past the beds you cleaned. (If you are an early morning person, feel free to start early. Just let me know so that I can plan accordingly.)
If you join us, please bring some or all of the following:
  • Shovel (large and small)
  • Garden clippers (to trim trees and big ole honkin' weeds)
  • Round Up
  • Gloves
  • Trash bags
If you'd like to donate and plant flowers in the spaces, I suggest you purchase a flat of hearty, drought tolerant flowers - and not spend too much money on them. 1 flat fills a single tree space. Please also bring some gallon jugs of water to water the plants.

Please let me know if you plan on helping so that I can have some idea of what to expect. If you have any questions on Saturday, call me at 304-638-8003.

Thanks.
