Our first Weekend Warrior Work Day is Tomorrow from 2:30-4:30pm. We
will meet at the Barnett Center (1524 10th Ave), and later some of us
will head over to the Maudella Taylor Garden (1437 11th Ave) a block a
way. Our goals are to add compost to our raised beds and some flower
beds, plant a few bulbs and seeds, and build a Hugelkultur (http://
www.richsoil.com/hugelkultur/) at the Maudella Taylor Garden.
For those who don't know, and by the way I didn't know till about 4
weeks ago, a Hugelkultur is basically a mound with waste tree wood
burried in the middle and good top soil and compost on top. As the
waste wood begins to break down, it acts like a sponge, absorbing
water and acting like a water reservoir for when it hasn't rained in a
while. Thus, it is also called Irrigation-Free Gardening. This is the
perfect set-up for planting on vacant lots with little to no water
source. So, we want to build one. We've plenty of waste wood on the
Maudella Taylor lot, as well as cardboard and newspaper, and rock for
lining the bottom edges. We will just need to wheelbarrow over some
soil and compost, and attempt to dig down a little bit.
Yes, the temperature will be a bit cold tomorrow, hanging out around
40-42 degrees. But we will be working during the warmest part of the
day, and we'll be working up a bit of a sweat, so from experience I
know you'll be plenty warm enough if you wear a hat, jacket and
gloves ;)
I hope that at least 6-8 can show up this weekend. I'd love to get
that Hugelkultur built and then watch it do it's thing this summer.
Also, our SCRATCH Program will be using the Maudella Taylor garden as
a learning garden, so anything we do there helps teach kids. And, if
you would like to volunteer to help wrangle kids on Tuesdays or
Fridays from 4:30-6pm, that'd be Wonderful :)
