what is this project?

I'm investigating the use of this project but I'm unclear on a few things:

Is this a single developer with some people contributing occasionally or is this trying to be a community of developers to update and improve the code?  It seems that the MIT license is a great way to get more people involved.  It's a reason I'm considering this over an AGPL licensed Ruby social network.

I notice plugins for FB and Twitter for the Rails 2 version for money.  What does that mean?  If I were a contributor to the project and decided to code an FB connector would it then be rejected by Bruno because he's making money off this?  (so yes, Rails3 version includes Oauth but what about other plugins?)  I just want to know because I want to understand what the intention of this project is before I make a decision to use it and by association, become a member of the developer community.  Thanks.

I am not speaking for Bruno or for the project, just my 2 cents. There
isn't much involvement from the community because Bruno's work is
stellar. However, when ever the community has something to offer Bruno
has incorporated it when it made sense. I've been on the list for a
while and I have to say Bruno is pretty fair.

The pay-for plugins are plugins that people use to make money, so it
is only fair that Bruno charges for them. If I remember correctly the
pay-for plugins were an experiment to see if they could bring in some
extra income for Bruno who is the primary developer on
CommunityEngine.

I suggest sending a pull request and see how it goes.

Hi David,

I'm the main developer; but there are plenty of other contributing code. Check Github to see what's happening in all the different forks:

It just means they're plugins that add functionality that I didn't think belonged in the core. They took me a long time to develop, so I decided to charge for them. Nothing's stopping anyone from writing similar/competing plugins and offering them up for free. There's nothing I could (or would) do to stop it.

Just as a reminder; this is a distributed project. There are lots of different forks out there, mine's just the original, and the one linked from CommunityEngine.org (which is down today due to DNS issues).

Hope that helps; I'm always trying to encourage more developer contributions, especially in terms of documentation. Also, the Rails3 branch is getting pretty close to release, and there are plenty of places to help out there.

Thanks!
Bruno

Cool.  Thank you.

Yup, I installed the rails3 branch and it seems to work.  I'm trying to figure out how the Class overriding/desert thing works... (new post).
