What's the best practice in implementing User Groups with CE?

For example, on teacherly, teachers can join and belong to various groups such as Schools, Associations, Clubs, etc.
Appreciate any ideas!

Just to be clear: Teacherly.com doesn't support any kind of groups functionality.
The best way to go about this would be to add a Group model in your application, along with the necessary migration, views and controllers. I can't think of anything special you'd have to do with regards to CE. It's just the same as you'd do on any other application.
