HI: Everyone:

G20 Solidarity Meeting synopsis for CRP
There were a few CRP members at the meeting. This is just what Aliya and I came up with. If you attended and have anything to add please do. Sorry for what we missed.

- 15 people attended the meeting (on a few hours notice!!!)
- Agenda: (we discussed) update of information, feelings,  affected friends, what goals do we have for the meeting (to create an action), what actions(s) do we want to do, what are the goals of the actions.
- Key media contacts are being informally engaged on Wed. through people who were in Toronto including a rep from Council for Canadians. The goal is to publicize the experiences of one person from Edmonton who was detained, and to give a broad analysis of why the weekend was so horrific.
- 2 people will be doing street theatre on Wed to raise awareness of what happened in Toronto
- A flyer that uses humor and irony (perhaps a mock press release) is being created as is a more serious one – both drawing attention to what happened in Toronto as well as advertising the march on Saturday (see below).
- Some will be participating in the Silly Summer Parade with a Bike group on Canada Day, doing some more street theatre (think Oil Tycoons in suits). They will be using humor to raise awareness of what happened while passing out the humorous flyer.
- Others will be finding spaces and places to turn their backs on cops and sing Oh Canada through out Canada Day while handing out the more serious flyer.
- On Saturday at 2pm downtown a march and rally is being planned. Details are being worked out.

We know there were a lot of people who couldn't make it but are interested in working on this. If you're interested in helping with any of the above actions, get in touch with Aliya at aliya...@shaw.ca or 780-691-3044 and she'll put you in touch with the people organizing. We will also have another meeting this Friday evening at 7pm to debrief the Canada Day actions and finalize things for the march. Email her also for the location if you're interested.

hey everyone!

if there is no meeting planned for tonight, how do people feel about
meeting on friday to help out with the G20 response actions? sounds like
there is a lot of anger and energy towards that this week and it might be
nice to participate in the response together as a group and put off crp
till next week.

unless of course, there is a meeting tonight...! in which case it'll be
nice to see you tonight!

I can't attend on Friday either, but would very much like to be
involved in the work related to the G20. Perhaps those who can act on
it now (I think some kind of protest on Canada Day is a great idea)
should move forward on it and then we can discuss the connections to
CRP at the next meeting on Wednesday.

I also think the idea of meeting Friday re: g20 is a good one.

ok, so since we're a mere few hours away from our usual meeting time with
no concrete place to meet, let's say that those who can/want to go to the
meeting on friday do so.

in the meantime, could someone from the SPACE committee please either
suggest or book a centralish spot for next wednesday's meeting? it'd be
good to talk amongst ourselves about g8/20 as well as have a meeting spot
confirmed soon so we have a place to talk about it :)

also, there is a meeting tonight that goes until 6 or 7pm to organize an
action for tomorrow at the silly parade. contact aliya if you'd like to
attend or be involved: 780 691 3044 or aliya...@shaw.ca.

cheers!

I think meeting for g20 reasons is awesome.
In regards to SPACE and SPACE making space suggestions - we are not there yet.

So speaking for myself - and not for SPACE - I would suggest trying out the University again with the addition of a buddy program. Some people feel excluded from the U of A space. One way we can change the energy of the space is to walk it with someone we trust. I also understand that many people feel like U of A security treat them badly. Having a buddy will help with this as well - you will have a witness.

So those who understand where people are coming from in terms of feeling unwelcome at the University could possibly make themselves available to those who feel unwelcome uncomfortable and buddy-ships can blossom.

That is just one idea. Open to hearing other ideas.

Hi Everyone:

Sorry to be online twice.
I have an idea / question to pose to the group who are interested in participating in the g20 march on Saturday.

Should we have a Queer Block as part of the march?
The idea comes from the Montreal based group: Politi Queers who will be dressing up in pink caps, bandanas ect as part of the Montreal march.

I can reasons for and against it. I am for it at this point because I think it reminds the Edmonton audience and the national audience that queers - as were many other groups- specifically mistreated and targeted. It also communicates the idea that G20 , police state and related issues are queer issues.

So I guess the questions are:
1. Interested in having a queer block as part of Saturday's Demo (2pm meet at Churchill)?
2. How should we 'brand' ourselves? pink? black? yellow (again!)?

Thanks.

yes!!!

i know there are a number of pink/black bandannas in someone's possession if we want to use those. i love the spirit of the queer protests i saw here: http://www.towleroad.com/2010/06/watch-gays-protest-g20-summit-in-toronto.html (scroll & watch the video).

a number of us are doing a variation on 'lesbian billionaires for the g20' and 'billionaires for the tar sands' tomorrow at the parade on Whyte. we're meeting at 11am and then will head to the parade. if you're interested, meet at Queen Alex Hall (10425 University Ave) with billionaire costumes and gear in tow.

Hi all,

The Billionaires for G20 made their first appearance yesterday
afternoon to celebrate the great job the Toronto Police did on our
pals, they may make another appearance at tomorrow's march (2pm at
City Hall). The G20 planning meeting tonight is going ahead for 7pm.
Please call or email me for the address if you wanna come, it's in the
Queen Alex neighbourhood.

I won't be able to make it tonight but I just got an okay to get to work late tomorrow so I can make the march. Can someone share details on the action, are there colours or anything that I should be wearing? Signs? The billionaire thing? Pink and black?

Help!

Hi all,

My suggestion is that we go with either meeting on the UofA campus or
at Leva, and that we make this decision and get the word out about it
tonight. Although both places are exclusionary in some ways, no
spaces will be without some problems. I think the greater danger is
in letting the space issue preoccupy all of our time and attention
such that we do not choose something until the very last minute- which
is perhaps the best way to ensure very few people will be able to
attend.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again after being away for awhile.

hey folks,

i myself can't make it tomorrow but i just talked to sara b and she says let's just go for it at Leva. (we figured that if we use a campus room it'll take til tomorrow to book it or confirm that it's available).

so on behalf of sara b (and me), here's the call: tomorrow, wednesday july 7th, 7pm @ Leva Cafe (11053-86 Avenue [close to the University LRT station]). the CRP lives on!

Hi Everyone:

(sorry for cross posting!)

I hope you are able to make it to Queer, Sex, & Prison: A Listening Event this Wed. This event will be in lieu of a meeting. We will be listening to selections of audio from the Prisoner Correspondence Project. (more info is pasted below)

This event also provided a different model to how the Community Response Project could meet. Rather than having regular weekly meetings over the summer it would be nice meeting only if there is a task, a pressing issue has emerged, or for specific events.

People will still gather socially on Wed (or whenever) if they wish and working groups will be meeting if they feel they want / need to.

Hope to see you on Wed.
Ted

Hi All,

I heard a brief snippet on CBC radio (1?) about a critical inquiry into Edmonton Police Services by a group--I believe called “APEC”? As you can tell, my details on the info are fuzzy, but I thought if anyone is near a radio tomorrow morning – it might be good to check it out in case there is anything of use. The current starts at 8:30 (and I imagine if any CBC program were to run anything on the EPS it would be the current, no?). I apologize in advance if this is a false alarm.

In my searches for the mystery program, I found the following links that may be of use, and may be good to keep on file as a kind of public reaction to the EPS (obviously the Shannon Barry story is not new).

I will be away for the rest of July but am keen to join back in in August.

Cheers,

Alissa

Hi Everyone:

This evening's Community Response Project presentation of Queers, Sex, and Prisons Listening Party was awesome.

Over 30 people attended tonight's event, lots of great conversation was had, thought provoking questions were raised and some good next steps for action emerged.

Thanks to the awesome people at Prisoners Correspondence Project for their It's War CD.  For a copy of the CD, track listening drop me a line and with PDP's permisson I will make you a copy. It will also air on an upcoming episode of Gaywire!

Thanks to HIV Edmonton for the craft supplies.

Thanks to everyone who attended and did not attend.

Attached are questions that came from the conversations. Please feel free to use creative, standard, awesome, helpful, silly forums to respond to the questions, ask new questions. Make a poster of questions and post them in high traffic areas. Create a facebook page or wiki for community members to respond and ask new questions. Meet up with people from the meeting that you don't already know and figure out some of the answers together.

Gather, question, act.

Below is infomation on other possible next steps.

Drop the group a line if I have missed anything or misunderstood anything.

Thanks!

Ted
