here's a link to a community event in san fran last year about police
accountability and alternatives that has some neat questions to think
about:

hope that the film (that i never made it too :() tonight was awesome! just
found another interesting link - i know it's problematic but i think it's
an interesting idea for sharing info and possibly holding individual
officers accountable:
oh and sb stands for sara b!
cheers,
sb
for those of you who are confused, sb stands for sara b :)
how does everyone feel about meeting this week? and where?
here's another link for you linksters and those of you who want to do the
know your rights cards out there; it's a good size/format of some know
your rights cards for when the police stop you. it might be cool to do
something wallet sized like this for our when you call the police/ways not
to call the police card:
http://www.pivotlegal.org/Publications/rightscards.htm
here's a format i was thinking might work with such a card- these are just
ideas, hopefully we can get our brain juices flowing so we can make
something way awesomer!
side A:
standard procedure for a police response/what SHOULD happen:
1. they give you their name and badge # (of the officer)
2. they give you a card with the file # and ph # so you can follow up
3. what kind of info they take from you at the time/when do they follow up
for a more detailed statement
4. etc...
side B:
alternatives to calling the police:
1. if you've been sexually assaulted you can go see a SART nurse; if you
want to report but don't want to talk to police you can do 3rd party
reporting through SACE and UofA sexual assault centres
2. sex workers can contact PAIF (i've heard they do advocacy/they help
people out who've been in trouble but does anyone know more?)
3. identify safe houses to go to in times of emergency in your community
4. develop an emergency response team/roles/actions within your community
5. other more creative/useful/effective actions we can brainstorm or set
up (i feel like i need to do a lot of brainstorming together on this
one!!!)
side C:
what to do if you see an officer doing something questionable/how to hold
a an officer accountable:
1. ask for officer's name and badge # (they have to give it to you)
2. contact the professional standards unit (even if you don't have name
and badge #) to file a complaint
3. other more creative/useful/effective actions we can brainstorm or set
up (like an external review board? or set up a ratemycop.ca type website?
or?)
side D:
just in case info:
1. statement to read to an officer if they happen to stop you
2. local free legal aid info
sorry for such a long email and for sending it out to everyone - i just
wasn't sure who still is on or has been added to the know your rights
cards list since the lists were made that megan sent out and didn't want
to leave anyone out. whether you're on "the list" or not, please feel free
to opinionate/offer guidance.
thanks!
sb
I feel great about meeting this week pretty much anywhere!
I like Sara's ideas for the Know Your Rights cards, and I'd like to
throw in another idea as well:
What the police can and cannot do when questioning/detaining/arresting you.
Here's a useful link regarding that:

Hi All,
Please see attached minutes from Wednesday’s meeting. You’ll notice one of the first items is to find an accessible, more central location for meetings. A couple of suggestions are included in the minutes.
Cheers,
Alissa

Is it possible for someone to look into appropriate spaces starting with small Community Halls that are relatively central?
Thanks for doing this work. Unfortunately, the weekend of October
15-17th would not work for me as I am away then. The other weekend is
likely fine however.
Hope to see you soon,
Robert

As well as being horrified by what is happening to so many people in
Toronto (many of my personal friends are involved), I am also buoyed
by the sight of so many queers mobilized against state violence.
Hopefully we can discuss this a bit at tomorrow's CRP meeting. Can
someone who attended today give a give a quick overview of what was
discussed tomorrow?
