What We’re Reading, Watching, and Listening To
We hope you’re finding some spaciousness during these summer months to catch up on books, podcasts, videos, and articles you’ve been saving! Here are a few pieces we’re diving into right now:
- We loved listening to the podcasts from the NPR student podcast challenge. This challenge was such a great way to engage students in relevant, self-directed learning!
- Sal Khan’s TED talk about the power of artificial intelligence and how it can spark a positive transformation in education gave us a lot to think about.
- As we think about how to create extraordinary learning experiences that center students, we often turn to Street Data: A Next-Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation, which reminds us that data can be "humanizing, liberatory and healing."
- We Do This 'Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice by Mariame Kaba outlines the deep transformation work needed to co-build the world we want to see.
- A friend in the sector, Alex Johnston, recently released Money with Meaning: How to Create Joy and Impact through Philanthropy, which aims to help donors find more impact and more joy from their giving by getting more resources and funds to where they can make the most difference.
- A new report from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, “Becoming an Ally: Partnering with Immigrant Families to Promote Student Success," offers specific recommendations to guide educators in overcoming barriers that have prevented them from engaging immigrant families as true partners in supporting their children’s learning.
- The Open System: Redesigning Education and Reigniting Democracy, a new book from Harvard University Press by Landon Mascareñaz and Doannie Tran, serves as a call to rethink educational institutions as open systems that can be responsive to the needs of students, families, and communities.
- In a great interview on WorkLife with Adam Grant, James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, talks about changing how we achieve goals and the power of small wins.
