Hi all - I'm looking for best practices for determining adoption of open source projects. Download data makes zero sense in the 21st century, and surveys are very hit & miss. How can you determine adoption of an open source project with actual data?

I'll take my answer off the air :) but will collect opinions for an article or blog post.
