Back to School Race - Sept. 9th

The BTS is less than 4 weeks away.   It seems like it’s been a lot of years since we weren’t fretting if there would be enough water to get a race in.   Today’s level is 765.54 and is higher than it was a week ago.   I would call that good Karma that should not be ignored.  

 

If you are from off the lake, we can get you rigged and on the water with lots of helping hands.     Please forward this message to anyone on your email list who may be interested.   NoR and Sis are due out shortly. 

 

Who is in?    Forecast is looking great.

Would be fun to have 4 tris out racing.

I have stopped bitching about my rating.  How ever much you want to lower it for the new sails doesn’t bother me.  I give up!  OMMM think pure thoughts.

 

Do you have Tobias’s email?  Dennis said he is looking for a replacement outboard.  I have a 2 stroke Johnson  saildrive I do not use.  It is in very good shape, but requires 180 degree swivel to go in reverse.  That is difficult for an old stiff fart on Ladybug, and I replaced the engine.  I could get it running (currently pickled) and bring it up to the lake.

Hmmm ……

 

For a race like the BTS, it is not only wind strength but that in combination with wind direction and consistency.   What works well for the trimarans off the wind also works for the spinnaker boats (think Joe charging down the Northville channel the last couple of years) in the same direction.    Lighter winds with a mostly above the beam direction but not close hauled would help.   A West wind for the slog from Fish House might open up a gap but that is usually needed to make up for the beam reach run up to Deer Island.

 

In the end, with the system we use in nearly all conditions, the best sailed boat will win.    We would have a better chance of winning by cancelling the Friday night pre-race party than picking the “right” head sail.
