Good afternoon everyone,

Here's our bi-weekly email of what's coming up at the shop and beyond.

Those of you earning bikes, or earning hours for community service or Sewell 2020, you'll want to keep an eye out for the italics. Your details are there.

In case you haven't noticed, I always try to include something of interest at the beginning of these emails that doesn't involve volunteering. This time it's a class Community Cycles and Buzz Feldman are offering. If you've always wanted to learn what it takes to be a safe cyclist on the road (as opposed to the sidewalk or bike paths...), this class is for you:

The League of American Bicyclists course “Safe and Enjoyable Cycling:  Traffic Skills 101” on Saturday and Sunday mornings, September 19 and 20, 2009.  This is an 9 hour class, over two days, for all cyclists, novice to advanced, 8:00a.m. ‘til 12:30p.m., both days.  Classes will be held at the Community Cycles, 2805 Wilderness Place, Boulder.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Learn how to fix a flat tire
  • Learn the importance of the ABC Quick Check
  • Learn how to shift to the right gear for your ride
  • Learn how to safely avoid crashes, dangerous objects and potholes as you ride
  • Learn where to ride in traffic for the most safety and visibility
  • Learn how to easily make difficult maneuvers in traffic, such as a left turn across four lanes of traffic
  • Learn about riding in all kinds of weather, day or night; Learn your clothing options
  • And much more!

This course will have you feeling more confident and safe wherever you ride.  As a result, you can expect to ride more and have more fun riding.

Half the time will be spent indoors in a classroom setting and half the time will be spent on the bike.  Bring your own bike and a water bottle.  Fixed gear bikes will not be permitted for this class.  Helmets are required.  Course materials and workbook are provided.

Conducted by LAB Certified Cycling Instructors:  Buzz Feldman, Robin Hildenbrand,  and Bob Rue.

For more information, contact: Buzz Feldman; email bu...@highgearbike.com or call 303-709-6991.

  • CC Members: $60.00
  • Non Members: $80.00

To register:  Send a checks to
Buzz Feldman
3135 Lake Park Way
Longmont, Colorado 80503

Register early.  Completion of an open-book pre-test is required before the session begins on Saturday, September 19, and time is needed to get the materials to you.

As always, email me (Josh) with any questions.

Thanks again for your interest in and your support of Community Cycles. We would not be what we are without volunteers like you.

North Storage Work Nights are BACK ON! 4:00-8 PM, Ongoing Wednesdays
This is the easiest way to both learn some bike mechanics, and earn hours towards your Earn-a-Bike.
Back by popular demand. And staff availability.
You do NOT have to be an experienced mechanic to help us on Wednesday Nights. We will teach you everything you need to know to help us.

We have much more capacity for help and workers up at this location. We can handle about 20-30 volunteers. We've got about 400 bikes in our North Storage Facility. We work out of a donated Boulder County space, so we don't publish the address on our website, but here is a google map and the address of the building.

Earn-a-Bikers, if you can at all make it when we start the evening, (4:00 PM on Wednesdays,) that would make our world much easier,
as we can teach everyone the evening's lesson all at once.

CU Volunteer Fair, Tabling Help Needed. Thursday, Sept 10, 10 AM to 2:30 PM

I need one or two people to sit at our table with me and help explain what we do to students who are interested in getting involved.
You do not have to be an experienced mechanic to help with this, but availability is limited. If you're interested in helping me with this, please respond ASAP.

Grant Writing Team Meeting (Experienced Grant Writers only, please) Thursday, Sept 10, 6:30 PM, at the shop.
We'll meet and discuss strategies for working together as a team to get us some funding.
If you have experience writing grants, or working on a team that's written grants, please get in touch. We've got a bunch of grants we'd like to go after, and could use some help getting through them all, in addition to finding potential new ones. Experienced grant writers only, please.
Email jo...@communitycycles.org if you do have experience with this, and feel like applying that experience to our organization.
You're welcome to earn hours writing grants for us, but as that's not such a regimented by-the-hour activity,
we'll need to discuss your hours beforehand.

Rolling Bike Clinic at Howard Heuston Park,
12 - 4 PM Saturday, September 12th
Rolling bike clinics are one of the most fun activites we do.  What could be better than helping kids fix their bike?
You can earn EAB hours working at the Rolling Bike Clinics. Please check in ahead of time if you're going to earn hours helping with the Rolling Bike Clinic.
I don't know that there's a more enjoyable way to earn hours, or to spend the day.

We need all levels of mechanical ability, from novices who've never touched a bike or a wrench to those of you who know how to build wheels. Experience working with kids is definitely helpful, but not at all required. If you'd like to help with the Rolling Bike Clinic, meet us at the shop around 11:30 AM. We'll ride out around 11:40 AM.  Or you can meet us at the Howard Heuston park.
Help for an hour or the whole event. We'll be in the sun all day, so bring some water and a snack for yourself.
To get to Howard Heuston Park:
From Valmont and 30th, go east on Valmont. Turn north onto 34th.
When you reach the roundabout, cross the footbridge into the park.
From Iris and 30th, go east on Iris. Turn south onto 34th.
The park is at the end of 34th Street.

Police Bike Donation Pickup, Date and Time TBA, later this week.
The police department has a pile of bikes for us. We'll have a big panel trick which will hold all of them, but we need help "flattening" the bikes
(take the pedals off, and turning the handlebars, both of which allow the bikes to be packed and stored in a smaller space/vehicle.
You don't need mechanical experience to help with this, but you should be comfortable lifting a 20-40 pound bike, or receiving one off of a truck.
If you'd like to help, but don't think you'll be able to help with the lifting, please email me. We might be able to use three or four of you.
We should have a time and date nailed down by the time you get back to me.

Letter Folding and Envelope Stuffing, Sept 12th and 13th.
We'll have a bunch of printed letters, brochures, and envelopes into which those two things go. We need some people to help stuff them. I've already gotten several people who've expressed an interest in doing this. It's tedious and slow, but super easy. I won't have the printed stuff until the end of the week.
I'll also be getting back to those of you who've expressed an interest in this to go over some more details.
Clean hands and nice penmanship are a must. We'll have about 1500 letters that need to go out to members, and we need some help folding the letters,
stuffing them into envelopes, and addressing those envelopes.
If you've got nice handwriting, and clean hands, please get in touch.
You can earn hours doing this, but there is a limited amount of eligible slots for this.
Please email jo...@communitycycles.org for more info.

Shifts in the shop need covering.
If you're interested in helping out in the shop, you can now sign up for a shift. You'll need to sign up in person at the shop any time we're open.
With as much demand as we have for shop shifts, there are some limitations. See Katie in the shop for more information.
You do NOT have to be an experienced mechanic to help us in the shop. We will teach you everything you need to know to help us.
Some of the work in the shop doesn't involve bikes at all.

Volunteer Orientation, Thursday, September 17th, 6 PM to 7 PM, at Community Cycles
Come and get a tour of our space and find out where we could most use you!  If you haven't been to a Volunteer Orientation, it's a great way to learn more about who we are and what we do. More importantly, it's a great way to find out how we can work together to make Boulder a better town in which to bike. Bring a friend for more fun! Those of you who have been to one Volunteer Orientation, and are looking to get more involved, please check out the Facilitator meeting info, posted below, scheduled for later in the month.

Earn-a-Bike Participants are welcome and invited to join us at Volunteer Orientations and participate. Participation in the meeting will not count towards Earn-a-Bike hours, but it is a great way to learn about everything we have going on here, and how you can get involved, specifically outside of normal shop hours.

Facilitator Training, Thursday, September 24th, 6 PM to 7 PM, at Community Cycles

We now have a four part facilitator training program that will get you up to speed on our programs, shop policy and procedures.  Once you complete the training you'll be eligible to do a number of things in and out of the shop; hold a shop facilitator shift once a week, table at the farmers market, represent CC at special events, help with the Youth Earn-a-Bike program and more.  Once you've become a facilitator you'll be able to order from our wholesale catalogs at 10% over cost.

To find out more about the training program attend the next monthly facilitator meeting on Thursday, September, 24th at 6pm at the shop.
