Hey All,
Here is our bi-weekly list of events at which you can volunteer or earn hours towards a bike. There's one that's super short notice, it's at the top of the list. It's for TODAY.
First, I want to thank everyone for the help with our Rolling Bike Clinics this summer. We're all done with them for the year. We had planned on doing 7 of them, and only one got cancelled due to weather. We tuned up over 200 bikes all told. We definitely could not have done nearly this much without your help. You can see
pictures from a few of the Clinics on our website.
Next year we hope to double the number of clinics, and bikes fixed. If you know of a neighborhood in Boulder you think could use a Rolling Bike Clinic next summer, please get in touch and we'll look into it.
On a different note, our Women and Trans Night is facing the possibility of being cancelled due to lack of support. We need volunteers to help keep the shop open and available to women and trans people. You don't have to be an expert mechanic to help with this. If you're interested, please email me and I'll put you in touch with the current team of folks who is transitioning out of the lead role.
We still have space in our
Traffic Skills 101 class. The deadline for registering is fast approaching. If you have questions, please get in touch. I highly recommend this class for anyone who rides a bike in a city environment, even if you don't ride on the street.
Following is a list of upcoming events and opportunities to get involved outside of our shop. You're always welcome to stop by the shop and schedule a shift, if you'd like to work there.
Those of you earning bikes, or earning hours for community service
or Sewell 2020, you'll want to keep an eye out for the italics. Your
details are there. Thanks again, everyone, for all of your support. I look forward to hearing from or seeing you soon.

Police Bicycle Donation Pickup, 2 PM TODAY.
The police department has a pile of bikes for us. We'll have a big
panel trick which will hold all of them, but we need help "flattening"
the bikes (take
the pedals off, and turning the handlebars, both of which allow the
bikes to be packed and stored in a smaller space/vehicle. You don't need mechanical experience to help with this, but you should
be comfortable lifting a 20-40 pound bike, or receiving one off of a
truck. If
you'd like to help, but don't think you'll be able to help with the
lifting, please email me.
We need 6-8 people to help today.
If you'd like to help with this, please go to the Boulder Police Department,
805 33rd St, Boulder (Next to the Salvation Army) at 2 PM.
Volunteer Orientation meeting, This Thursday, September 17th
Come and get a tour of our space and find out where we could most
use you! If you haven't been to a
Volunteer Orientation,
it's a great
way to learn more about who we are and what we do. More importantly,
it's a great way to find out how we can work together to make Boulder a
better town in which to bike. Bring a friend for more fun! Those of you
who have been to one Volunteer Orientation, and are looking to get more
involved, please check out the Facilitator meeting info,
posted below,
scheduled for later in the month.
Earn-a-Bike Participants are welcome and invited to
join us at Volunteer Orientations and participate. Participation in the
meeting will not count towards Earn-a-Bike hours, but it is a
great way to learn about everything we have going on here, and how you
can get involved, specifically outside of normal shop hours.
Grant Writing Team Meeting (Experienced Grant Writers only, please)
Tuesday, Sept 22, 6:30 PM, location TBA.
We'll meet and discuss strategies for working together as a team to get us some funding.
If
you have experience writing grants, or working on a team that's written
grants, please get in touch. We've got a bunch of grants we'd like to
go after, and could use some help getting through them all, in addition
to finding potential new ones. Experienced grant writers only, please.
Email jo...@communitycycles.org if you do have experience with this, and feel like applying that experience to our organization.
You're welcome to earn hours writing grants for us, but as that's not such a regimented by-the-hour activity,
we'll need to discuss your hours beforehand.
North Storage Work Nights are BACK ON! 4:00-8 PM, Ongoing Wednesdays
This is the easiest way to both learn some bike mechanics, and earn hours towards your Earn-a-Bike.
Back by popular demand. And staff availability. You
do NOT have to be an experienced mechanic to help us on Wednesday
Nights.
We will teach you everything you need to know to help us.
We have much more capacity for help and workers up at this location. We can handle about 20-30 volunteers.
We've got about 400 bikes in our
North Storage Facility. We work out of a donated Boulder County space, so we don't publish the
address on our website, but here is a
google map and the address of the
building.
We're also looking for the right person or people to help us staff these nights on a regular basis. Expert mechanical knowledge is helpful, but not 100% necessary to help with this. If you're interested in committing to a regular Wednesday night schedule, please get in touch with
jo...@communitycycles.org
Earn-a-Bikers,
if you can at all make it when we start the evening, (4:00 PM on Wednesdays,) that would make our world much easier, as we can
teach everyone the evening's lesson all at once.
Become part of the Community Cycles Street Team
We need folks to helpus spread the word about events and offering at Community Cycles. This
may involve putting up/passing out fliers, helping us get in touch with local media, or posting messages on Facebook or Myspace.
We're especially looking for some CU or Naropa students to help post flyers on campus. We can provide the flyers if you can help distribute them. Please email
jo...@communitycycles.org for more information.
Want to help Community Cycles out on a higher level?
Think about becoming a Facilitator.
Monthly 'Tater meeting, Thursday, September 24th, 6-7 PM
We're looking to expand the core group of folks who make things happen here at Community Cycles. We call these people "Facilitators", or "Taters" for short. We'll be going over what it takes to become and stay a 'Tater at our monthly Tater Meeting, which will be on Thursday, September 24th, from 6-7 PM at the shop.
