Content-Type: application/msword; name="CBL&R@JHU Summary for Faculty.doc"Dear Professor Galambos and Professor Hanke,
I hope your summers are going well. My name is Melissa Solis and I am a rising junior at Johns Hopkins University. I am a member of the Student Advocacy Board (SAB) within the Center for Social Concern and for the past year, I have been working on an initiative to create Community Based Service Learning courses at JHU. Community based service learning is a method of teaching that combines academic curriculum with meaningful community service or community research, in order to meet community needs. With this service learning we hope to strengthen community partnerships and increase civic engagement to create long lasting and strong relationships between Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore City community. Today, many of our peer institutions such as MIT, Princeton, and Stanford already have programs and centers in place for students to engage in service learning courses. The provost has recently announced a new framework for JHU, "Framework for the Future". This new framework calls for new and innovative ideas in order to "positively impact society through improved research, scholarship, creativity, teaching and professional practice" (Provost Johnson). As part of the Framework, there are two grants being offered. The Center for Social Concern is applying for the Discovery RFP. We are proposing that community based service learning courses are a great way for Johns Hopkins to positively impact society and should be the next step for JHU. In order for this proposal to be accepted, we need the support from our faculty. With this, I am wondering if you would be interested in spearheading this project as a member of a working-group and/or being a future professor for one of the community based learning courses. If you are unsure about the level of involvement that you would like to commit at this time but are still interested in future participation, this is also greatly appreciated and I will continue to update you on our progress! I would be more than willing to come and discuss this initiative further when I return to campus in September if you are interested. I have attached a rough description of the initiative as well. Please let me know if you are interested in helping us with this project and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Melissa Solis
