The YMCA movement  IS a Christian movement. No one other than a Christian can become a member of the Y. A church certificate is required, together with an affirmation of Faith.

It is non denominational, though the New Delhi YMCA appellate body has the CNI Bishop and the Principal of St Stephen's College as its trustees and final arbiters. No Other church is represented.

It is secular in  the fact that its services are open to all communities, specially in Human resource development, youth, sports and hospitality, including its hostels, a euphemism for hotels.

It is apolitical in that it does not take political sides. In fact, the Delhi YMCA  is scared of even giving its halls on rent for anything that smacks of anti establishment activity. It has never  participated in movements  against persecution, for Dalits, Students and such like. It does participate ins safe things such as environment, girl child, and Independence Day celebrations.

Its office bearers and board members have been active in politics, been members of political  parties, and many of them have  made YMCA functions a forum to showcase local political leaders in office.

As elsewhere in the church at large, there is a propensity, understandable I presume, to be friendly with the government of the day, with IAS and police officers and always, the income tax and NDMC.

Mr Modi has been a favourite of the YMCA in Gujarat and was guest at some of their biggest  national meetings.

I have not kept record of proximity to the RSS, but that too is not unknown.

This could speak of an alienation of the Y movement from the social and political reality of India, and tis lack of empathy with Tribals [other than presenting their song and dances, with Dalits, with OBCs and other minority and deprived groups.

It may be difficult to stop any effort by determined and powerful groups of people to invite anyone they chose to, up to and including Mr  Mohan Bhagwat if they wish to.

But this is a reminder  how much work remains to be done in educating ourselves as  community in ideology and empathy for the people on the margins, the victims.

Those are the people our Master, the carpenter from Nazareth, loved.

If i am not mistaken YMCA across the globe is apolitical and non-religious body. Its funds cannot be used for these purposes.

As Mr Kurien Joseph points out, these are socio cultural organisations, and though  limited in their voting membership to practicing Christians, have never claimed they represent  the community in political area.  In fact, they are known for keeping a distance from anything political.

The RSS remains a religious-political-cultural organisation which believes in religious nationalism.
