Mr Lancy D’Cunha, farmer-engineer and noted  Laity leader, has been elected the National President of the All India Catholic Union for the term 2016-18 at the annual general body held over the weekend in Kolkata. Mr D’Cunha,  50, was earlier the Vice president.

Mr Elias Vaz, a senior Goa corporate executive, was elected the new National Vice President, The new Secretary General is former Delhi Catholic Federation president Mr A Chinnappan and the new Treasurer is Mr Alexander Anthony who simultaneously also serves as president of the Catholic Association of Bengal. Dr John Dayal, National president in 2004-08, is the official spokesperson. Mr Eugene Gonsalves, a Kolkata based entrepreneur,  president from 2012-2016, had initiated the centenary celebrations .

The All India Catholic Union has started preparing for  the celebrations of its Centenary.  years have seen it repeatedly intervene  when issues of freedom of religion and expression were challenged.

Mr Lancy D’Cunha, born on 24 October 1966 in Bondel, Mangalore in south Canara, has been active at the grassroots in the Catholic community, and in  nurturing a dialogue with other faiths and working with them in  the basic issues of the people.  He was among those who led the movement for justice for the victims of the targeted violence in August 2008. hough Kandhamal and Orissa was the  epicenter, Mangalore was also viciously hit. He is married to Lidwin, 42, a teacher. They have two sons and a daughter

The AICU president said the Union will  file an intervention petition in the Supreme court on the Dalit Cristian demand for scheduled caste rights as are given to Dalits of other faiths such as Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs. The public interest litigation has been in court for more than 10 years without the government responding to court notices.

The AICU is also involved in the drawing up of a response to the National Education Policy proposed by the Union Government as it moves ahead on a multi-point program of strengthening the constitutional rights of religious minorities and other marginalized groups such as Dalits, Tribals and nomadic other targeted groups. Within the church, the AICU works with Catholic Bishops as well as other denominations to build a stronger laity aware of their rights and duties  as a church and as citizens.

Dear Virginia
Dr Maria Emelia Menezes was the first woman National President of Aicu earlier this century. There are several women in the national working committee and in the States.
Wish you were there at the Kolkata Agm.
But i agree with you. There is not a single Catholic group which is exclusive to women    A pity.
Must change
People like you must sharpen the struggle.
I was among those who won I. The recent Pais Supreme Court judgement.  Another small reform. Another small step.
Thanks for the mail.
God bless

Dear Sir

Will be happy to send you copies of the voluminous theological, sociological and judicial evidence cited in the PILs. Google could also possibly help.
Caste is not a religious issue.
Hindus publicly do not practice caste in the US. They would be jailed.
Muslims in china have just one wife
Protestants have women clergy

Dear Friends,

Christianity and Islam do not believe in any caste system.

In Christianity we all become united with the body and blood of Christ the day we are baptised.  If we believe in Baptism then there cannot be any division among Christians on caste and colour lines.  There are no higher or lower castes - all Christians are equal made in the image of God.

Similar is the practice in Islam.

So where does the Dalit issue come up in Christianity or Islam? Why does the South (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) still practice separate lines for communion and separate burial grounds based on caste? It is shame on Christianity.  Those who practise these malaise should leave Christianity without being on two boats.

Muslim leaders have already rejected the demand of the Mylapore Archbishop George Antonysamy to include Dalit Muslims along with Dalit Christians in the list of Scheduled Castes has evoked disapproval from Muslim leaders, who pointed out that “Islam does not recognise caste divisions.”

“When someone becomes a Muslim they are part of an ocean. Islam does not differentiate people based on their caste,” said former MP and Indian Union Muslim League leader Kader Mohideen.  He said the demand of the Muslims in the country was 10 per cent exclusive reservation as recommended by the Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission. “Economically, educationally and socially, Muslims across the country are identified as a backward community. Including Muslims in the list of SCs is not acceptable to us since it will amount to acknowledging casteism in Islam,” Mr. Kader Mohideen said.
(Please  read
Report captioned "Leaders oppose inclusion of Dalit Muslims in SCs list" dated 12th August 2016 in Mattersindia)

So technically we are on a shallow ground.

By the way, who is funding the court case at the Supreme Court?  Does the AICU Budget set aside funds for litigation?

Regards

Isaac

Dear Mr. John
Thanks for sharing the news about the new office bearers of AICU.
Congratulations to all the new officer bearers.
I am happy to know that the AICU will file an intervention petition in the Supreme Court in the case of SC status to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims. We are all in a caste cast and trying to hold people responsible is a shallow assumption Isaac.

Caste, religion, language, country, profession are all different type of castes and all crisscross and people use it as per their convenience.

Blue collar and white collar, blacks and whites, Muslims and Christians, even rich and poor. They form rules in areas of control and others follow.

John’s examples are valid and the religious bodies turn a blind eye in the name of pastoral prudence. Example church should ban Catholics from going to Saudi Arabia and America should not accept trillions of dollars from Saudi as US is Christian nation. Is this possible?

I think you should let it go as this will not get us anywhere.

Alexander Anthony has become President of Catholic Association of Bengal (CAB), through suppression of facts. He knows this. Let him call an EGM, it will be proved in front of all members present.

Also the name Catholic Association of Bengal is a misnomer.  Neither does the Association serve the whole of Bengal nor it has any jurisdiction over the whole of Bengal simply because Bengal is now divided into eight dioceses, with each diocese having its own jurisdiction. So for all practical purposes, the Association has been cut to size and it has to accept the reality.

As per the disclosure at the AGM held on 18th September 2016 in the presence of Thomas D'Souza, the Archbishop of Calcutta and Ex-Officio Chairman of CAB, the Association has only ten active parishes and six dormant / inactive parishes. Thus it is not even serving the whole of the Archdiocese of Calcutta.  It has a total Life Membership (who do not have any voting rights!) of 682 Members as on 31st March 2016 (based on  the declaration given at the AGM by the Secretary). No list of Ordinary Members was given.

Also the AGM report did not name the parishes which are active and their activity reports.  Activity reports of parish units indicate the ground reality. The whole picture is wishy-washy. Putting up the Activity Report now would mean it is a knee-jerk reaction and cosmetic.

Another point members ask is what benefit Catholic of Bengal derives by affiliating with AICU?

Regards

Isaac Gomes
