Greetings
I think most comments are based on an incorrect understanding of the award.
It is an award launched not by state or central governments, but by a media house.
Harshvardhan, the central minister, was the chief guest who gave away the private awards
We congratulate Caritas which so richly deserves many more genuine awards.
But this in no way means the government will not continue to target it on FCRA or other issues. It remains vulnerable, as do all diocesan and cinfgration run NGOs.
My old expectations from Caritas has always been for balancing its projects in favour of empowerment. An unreasonable demand, bt so be it.
God bless

Would have made a great statement if they had refused to accept it citing the lack of social harmony and humanitarian values in the political party that is giving the awards. Or acknowledged award, but refused to accept from the minister who has been silent on all humanitarian issues.

Dear Fr Ajay
I am a strong supporter of Caritas, globally, and specially of Caritas India. It is the love of Christ in Action.
As you commend, the German model is a case in point. That is the way to go.
Advocacy should be not to supplement government effort, buttons force the government to act. That is why we pay our taxes to the government, not to the Church as is he case in some European countries which do have a tax to collect money for charity.
Long live Caritas.
If I could, I would nominate Caritas Global for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Warm regards
John Dayal

Caritas India deserves the recognition. Do appreciate that Caritas India as official social wing of Catholic Church in India has been at the forefront responding to many humanitarian crisis and development works. We live in a time where NGOs are at the receiving end; except for those organisations that supplement government initiatives. Yet, those organisations too; not without surveillance.
There are huge expectations from Caritas India in favour of empowering the margins and minorities. Any single organisation cannot match such expectations. Yet Catholic Church has to find out ways to respond to the expectations. I find German Catholic Church  model in responding to such expectations could be explored in India; it needs to be done urgently. There are seven/eight independent entities under the patronage of the German Bishops Conference; focussing several areas: Children, Relief and rehabiliations, social Development, PR works, Justice-human rights works.
Caritas is one of such entities. Until that happens, the task of dignity and rights of the margins and minorities would remain as expectations only.

Vani’s mail troubles me, and not just troubles my heart, which too is important to me.

I have known the Xaxas for some time, and I too was shocked at Abhay’s sudden passing away. He was so much younger than I, and there was no reason form his life to end so suddenly.

But this is not about his death.

But about issues after his death , that Vani raises.

The least Caritas management must do is to tell us their side of events and issues.

And beyond that, how does Caritas help the family, not as charity, but as their bounden duty for an associate who may or may not have been an “employee” within the meaning of the act.

I hope the Church, and Caritas is Church’s Love, will not be found wanting.

Dear Virginius,

I am indeed surprised , not because of Caritas receiving the award or not being able to clarify.

But by its double standard of denying the fact that Late Abhay Xaxa was their employee and worked for them till the last and died (circumstances doubtful) during a conference held at Matigara, Siliguri earlier this year (14 March 2020). when I had raised the issue of compensation with the authorities in a casual discussion with one of their representative with whom Abhay had been till the last, he stated that "there was no formal contract of Abhay with the Tribal Desk of the CBCI , with whom he was associated. I was shocked. We have always fought for the labourers who died at work place and raised hue and cry till the deceased's family was assured with a compensatory package, this organisation shamelessly denied association of the deceased , here none other than Abhay Xaxa, who led movements and stood by the rights of people.

Not surprising that it will remain an NGO who just exploits the emotions of lay men and women who are ready to work for a cause...

Dear John,
Thanks for drawing attention to the fact that it was an award from the media house and not from the government. I was just wondering how it is possible for a church institution to get an award from this regime which sees everything done by the church as an instrument of conversion. The clarification should have come from the Caritas.

Dear friends

Let me reiterate what I have written earlier.

Abhay Xaxa, excellent scholar, brave activist,  and a wonderful human being, died in the midst of his advocacy work.

It is not about technicalities of his employment, the existence or absence of  employment letters, contracts, agreements.

Or obligations.

Would you say it is possible to set a tentative target to collect an amount to assist the bereaved family. Money is no compensation. But it helps with the mundane things of life.

I would not call it crowd funding, or cloud funding, or donations. And it will not amount to acknowledging culpability.

I would call it caritas,  expressing our love for Christ as church, people of God.

It should not be difficult.

I hesitate to put a figure on my own.

God bless us all in these difficult times when resources are dimninsed and needs  increase

But I will be able to that for UCF google group only as I am the manager of this account. So I can take responsibility for this only.

It's not accurate to report that all responded positively. Some strongly reacted. Those reactions were deleted. This is censorship.

Dear All,

I initiated a congratulatory mail with good intention and all of you have responded with same feelings. Please accept my gratitude for that.

Meanwhile, may I please take the liberty of clarifying that to the best knowledge of mine late Mr Abhay Xaxa was not an employee of Caritas.

If I am not mistaken Mr Xaxa was part of certain commissions of CBCI like any lay person like me are part of as a volunteer. I could be wrong in this regard but I am hundred percent certain he was not an employee of Caritas.

Thanks & regards,
