Will Modi meet Pope Francis at the Vatican?

There was something out of the ordinary in the manner a handful of newspapers reported over the weekend that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will call on Pope Francis at the Vatican during his Rome stopover for the first of two multinational meetings in Europe.

There was no official confirmation of the meeting other than the news leak, which foreign correspondents would normally call a trial balloon.

The report has raised many questions. If Modi is indeed meeting the pope — an important event in view of the rampant targeted hate and violence against religious minorities in India — this would burnish his international image. This, some say, would be a consummation devoutly to be desired with a great cascading impact on inter-community relations in India.

In his seven years in office, Modi has stubbornly refused to invite the head of the global Catholic Church to India, home to almost 30 million Christians, about 60 per cent of whom are Catholics.

Dear Fr Prakash
Greetings
Good to hear from you after a while.  We must resume the exchange of information and analysis that we initiated under your leadership in the thick of the silence of the clampdown.
Re this UCAN item.
It is the government that planted the story.
And could not follow it up for reasons best known to itself.
The UCAN analysis used the opportunity to put focus once again on persecution and the crushing of civil liberties, including the custodial death of Fr Stan.
That we must not let anyone forget.
As far as a Papal visit to India is concerned, our Cardinals have themselves called on the PM more than once to convey their request. It is not an issue uppermost in my mind. I of course have no source in the Roman Curia to find out more.
We must continue our struggle against erosion in constitutional values and institutions. Our citizenship and our rights would otherwise be at stake.
All offices have a shelf life, but it can be too late for the margins.
God bless you for your priesthood, activism, sincerity and scholarship.  Still rare.
Warm regards
John Dayal

Dear Friends,

Greetings

I have been following this conversation. I am wondering if we are giving too much of publicity by this to a person who looks for this and will try to use this trip, the publicity before and after to promote his brand among the andha bhakts and also try to pretend to seek reparation. Holy Father as the Head of a State has to meet him if he wants to. Who knows he may invite the Holy Father to visit India and try to take mileage of it. If that happens how do we respond? Will we feel gratified or disturbed that this has happened. Best is not even to take note of it. again and again putting his photo makes matter worse. Not sure i am right.

But this is my sense. I could be fully wrong.
