The Flowering of Spiritual Movements

Through generational attrition it seems when spiritual practice communal movements recede, like happened in the 19th and early 20th Century with the Quakers or the Shaker movement, evidently “it ain’t over until it is over”.

The TM movement today is undergoing a generational transition and like within the storylines of these other movements, that which does remain of the TM movement is seeking a place of renewed relevance to a greater world.

I grew up with and most of my adult life I have been around spiritual practice movements.   I grew up with Hicksite Quakers as elders and I learned Transcendental Meditation at age 16 and from then have spent extended time with founders of spiritual practice movements. I am on the young side of the baby-boom generation and I am now watching contemporaries of my life pass away in time. While attending memorials was once more rare and now in recent years I am attending memmorials more and more for friends who were part of my journey in life. Some time ago I began gathering a list of TM meditators who were part of a larger meditating community I knew. The list shows a receding generation that seems a recurring pattern in the flowering of spiritual movements.

The story of the Shakers is well told as a collapse popularly misconstrued to their practice of celibacy, the Society of Friends broadsided by evangelicalism and social and generational change went through a recession in their numbers in the same time frame. Though both groups were founded by mystics as spiritual practice groups both continue even now in vestige of their former selves.

The generational recession of numbers in the old ‘un-programmed’ practice of the Society of Friends Quaker Meetings is shown in an appendix published at the very beginning of the 20th Century.

Evidently in the scope of attrition of transcendent meditationist numbers attending group meditations of the TM  movement a similar generational collapse is being witnessed as happened with the Quakers, Shakers and also at Amana Colony.

As a founding energy (shakti) of a mystic and spiritual practice of a formation era came to be supplanted by monotony and routinized rigidity of maintaining institutional states and causes built up from founding eras then successive generations evidently becoming tired went their own ways on into a material world of their day. ..all work and no ‘shakti’ make of Jack and Betty dull worker ants.

Currently (2017), on average Fairfield, Iowa TM'ers would be.. of the Boomer II generation,

..about 65-70 years of age, on average.

1994, Survey of Fairfield Adult Meditators,

Age:

25-35 65 10%

36-45 391 60%

46-55 138 21%

> 55 47 7%

Post-War Cohort

Born: 1928-1945

Coming of Age: 1946-1963

Age in 2004: 59 to 76

Current Population: 41 million (declining)

Boomers I or The Baby Boomers

Born: 1946-1954

Coming of Age: 1963-1972

Age in 2004: 50-58

Current Population: 33 million

Boomers II or Generation Jones

Born: 1955-1965

Coming of Age: 1973-1983

Age in 2004: 39 to 49

Current Population: 49 million

For a long time the Baby Boomers were defined as those born between 1945 and 1964. That would make the generation huge (71 million) and encompass people who were 20 years apart in age. It didn't compute to have those born in 1964 compared with those born in 1946.

http://www.socialmarketing.org/newsletter/features/generation2.htm

Rates of Change and the Calculus of Aging in TM..

Some of what we can see in these memorian lists is a natural aging-out of the Post-War Cohort, the people who were early with Maharishi in the very early (1950’s-1960’s) SRM movement,  the Walter Koch and Charlie Lutes generation of TM.

Now what we are seeing in TM is an accelerating rate of attrition to aging-out of the Boomer I and Boomer II’s.  Interestingly, the cusp time period where the Boomers I and Boomers II met TM was the time frame where TM ‘took off’ in popular (college undergrad, grad student, professor-age) culture for a time.  A lot of the TM movement intake happened in those years 1968-76, over the cusp of the ‘coming of age’ of Boomers I and II.

You can see this particular cusp in the age span in the Dome group meditation or at meetings of the Fairfield TM community now (2017).  The WWII generation is pretty much gone from the ranks of TM now.  The Post-War Cohort are pretty thin, geriatric or gone now and the Boomers I are increasingly shuffling or gone on.  Boomers II are increasingly ‘in diminish’.  Time is short regardless.

The ‘Prime Minister of TM’ was born in 1955?

Your own odds of living 10 more years..

if you are 45 years of age your own odds of being alive in 10 years

is about 24 in 25.

According to the USA Census your odds of making it ten more years if you are:

53 years of age is about 10 in 11.

Your odds of living 10 years more from 60 years of age is about 5 in 6.

Your odds of making it 10 more years if you are 68 are about 3 in 4.

If you are 70 the odds are 2 in 3 that you will make it 10 more years.

Of those who remain alive at age 75, 1 in 2 will last ten more years.

At age 80, 1 in 3 you will last 10 years.   At age 85, 3 in 20 will make it another 10 years.

Age 88, 1 in 20 living at age 88 will make it another 10 years,

..cumulatively, most everyone else is gone before then.

The die-off really starts to happen from about age 60. Very few actually make it to be older than age 85,  most are gone on by then.

For some time I have been keeping a ‘list’ in memoriam, adding names as time has gone along.  It is a list in its way from a particular group of utopians who have passed away in time. It is an interesting perspective on something that has been communal that has gone along. I was collating the list recently to print out and add as a record to the State Archives here in Iowa as it relates to Fairfield, Iowa and the meditating community that came to Fairfield.

To have this file someplace other than on my computer I put it on a forum that I keep as a blog on things like this. Some of you might find the file interesting to scroll through and reminiscent to groups that you may study.

My wife is a career RN and has vigil-ed with hundreds of people of the meditating community who have passed away over the years. In recent years I keep track of the passings by reading hand notices put up near the entry doors to the daily group meditations in the Fairfield Domes and posted at the health food grocery store and coffee shops. I also make a study of going to memorials. The meditating community is an incredibly verbal bunch and it is always interesting to go hear the friends of people who have passed on tell stories of the person and of times over decades related to the TM movement

I put the larger file on this Google group that it can be found and opened at:

Doug – What a most special thing you have done.

This is important history, not simply for Fairfield or for the larger meditating community, but for any “social movement,” utopian or otherwise.

I do hope that you will follow through and provide your list to the State Archives.  Perhaps they would accept it not only in hard copy (which is

“as of a date certain”) but also electronically so that you can replace it as the list grows.

"Whoever has come, will certainly go; nobody stays here.

Always keep your bags packed. We never know when the call will come. The call of death is like an arrest warrant: there is no hope of further "appeal."72 Then and there, one must drop everything and leave. Wherever, however, one must go. This need not be difficult if you are prepared from the beginning.

He who is always ready to go cannot commit sins. Sins are possible only when one forgets about the life hereafter. If one can always remember that he has to leave one day, then a man will never adopt lying and bad conduct.

Realizing that your fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers have not stayed, it is easy to understand that, "I, too, cannot stay here permanently." Since it is certain that you will leave, then those people who prepare for the journey at the outset can rest comfortably; and if you are not ready, then you will surely have difficulty. Take care: "don't do something that will make you repent when you go." "

Thank you for posting the obituaries, Doug.

There was a time, during my teaching days, when I touted, "Perfect Health in the Direction of Immortality"

I look back on this with a certain amount of amusement at my naivete, and unbridled optimism.  What I do not carry with me is anger and resentment that I bought into a path, that didn't quite live up to its lofty expectations.

On the other hand, stepping onto a spiritual path, which encourages you to go beyond the superficial aspect of things, what price do you put on that?
