BACKGROUND

 

The IUCN World Conservation Congress is a quadrennial event with several thousand participants that brings together the IUCN members for the four-day Members’ Assembly, preceded by a four-day Forum with several hundred events open to the general public. The 2012 Congress will take place in Jeju, Republic of Korea, in September 2012.

The Fundraising Officer will play a lead role in fundraising for the Congress, including the development of selected partnerships and financial support from the private sector, charitable Foundations, bilateral and multilateral agencies, IUCN Member organizations, as well as private individuals. The Fundraising Officer will report to the Director of the Constituency Support Group and work closely with the Congress Unit, the Forum Team and the Heads of IUCN Programmes to develop a fundraising strategy that aims at raising funds both for the Congress (event) and for IUCN’s programmatic work.

The incumbent has a functional reporting line to the Head, Strategic Partnerships and will work closely with the Strategic Partnerships Team on all aspects of fundraising as well as with the Business and Biodiversity Programme for selected private sector partnerships. A minimum fundraising target has been set at CHF4 million to be raised to cover Congress organizational costs with a further target to be defined to be raised for additional programme development and special events.

The position is initially being filled at 80%, but there may be a need to increase the work percentage to 100% in 2011.  

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develop a fundraising strategy that aims at securing income for Congress expenditures (including a concept for corporate thematic exhibitions (pavilions), sponsorships and governmental funding) with the objective to establish longer term partnerships with IUCN  

  2. Develop a sponsor/donor recognition programme  

  3. Research, target and establish contacts with potential corporate and other sponsors for the Congress based on:
    o Congress objectives
    o IUCN´s Private Sector Strategy and Private Sector Guidelines
    o Specific technical initiatives and campaigns to be discussed or launched at the Congress
    o Synergies between sponsors/donors and IUCN  

  4. Define and implement partnership strategies which may include the following components:
    o Corporate giving
    o Philanthropy
    o Sponsorships
    o Sales and licensing agreements  

  5. Assist IUCN Regional Offices in securing funding for sponsored participants from their region  

  6. Work with ODA donors and charitable Foundations to identify and secure Congress funding  

  7. Work with the IUCN Global Communications Unit in the design of information material for potential donors  

  8. Develop and deliver compelling presentations tailored to the needs of potential donors  

  9. Work with Heads of Global Programmes and Forum Team to design and sell Congress pavilions to showcase critical environmental issues of the 21st century and assist with the organization and sales of exhibition space  

  10. Develop a specific strategy for targeting donors in Korea and Asia and work with the Korean Organizing Committee in approaching these donors  

  11. Ensure donor and sponsor needs are met, manage partnerships toward success for both parties, and ensure that sponsors and donors receive appropriate recognition before, during and after the Congress  

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in marketing/communications.  
  • Masters degree in marketing or related field.  
  • Proven experience in fundraising, ideally with a focus on corporate fundraising.  
  • Excellent communication skills in English.  
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or French would be an asset.  
  • Understanding of IUCN and environmental community highly desirable.  
  • A good understanding of the Korean culture and practice and/or proficiency in Korean would be an asset.  

SALARY

The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from CHF 76'928 to CHF 96'160, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax.
