A friend of mine pointed me in the direction of a book called "Pagan
Christianity" that asserts that much of what is called "church" today
is based in tradition and superstition rather than Godliness. While I
haven't read the book, it makes some statements that I certainly agree

From the site I discovered a link that discusses the modern "house
church" movement. It is also interesting:
