| It's Time to Clean and Repair Thousands of Bikes for Kids in our City! |
|
Have you ever had that feeling of deja vu? We're feeling it in our FB4K warehouse! For the fifth consecutive autumn we've collected over 2,000 bikes with hundreds more on the way thanks to the wonderful folks at Home Depot...and all of those bikes need to be cleaned and repaired so we can get them to kids in our community prior to the holidays.
Now we need all the help we can get! Volunteering for FB4K for a 3-hour shift is a super fun and rewarding experience: we have all the tools you need for the job you sign up for and no skills are necessary if you want to clean bikes. However, if you have wrenching skills, we'll put you to work on getting these bikes mechanically safe and sound for a child.
You can volunteer as an individual or as a group for a rewarding team building experience with your work colleagues; you can spend a few hours socializing while you help to change the life of a child with a bicycle. We have refreshments to keep you nourished while you work and plenty of parking inside a fenced-in lot. Our warehouse is located in the generously donated Piston Group Detroit plant, located in the Corktown neighborhood, at 4015 Michigan Ave. Last year we had almost 1,600 volunteers help us get over 2,400 bikes to kids in Detroit and surrounding communities and we hope to break that record this year.
To volunteer as an individual, click on the button below and sign up on our website. You'll be asked a question or two about your skill level to make sure we slot you in the right job, you'll need to agree to a release, then you'll choose a shift that works for you. We are open seven days a week from October 3 through December 8, with shifts available the following hours:
M, W: 8a-11a, 11a-2p, 2p-5p Tu, Th: 8a-11a, 11a-2p, 2p-5p, 5p-8p F: 9a-12p, 12p-3p Sa: 10a-1p, 1p-4p Su: 1p-4p
To sign up as a group you can contact our volunteer coordinator at volu...@fb4kdetroit.org.
Most of us have fond memories of that very first bike - of being able to just go around the block or to a place farther than we'd ever been before by ourselves. It's a sense of independence and joy that we want every kid to experience, along with the chance to get out in the fresh air and exercise away from the screens that dominate our modern lives - bikes are a source of mental as well as physical health for kids and adults and we love spreading our passion for riding to the next generation! |
