Hello, everyone. Happy imminent new year.

This week's COVID-19 Update from the Washtenaw County Health Department reports some sobering figures - the full update is below, if you're interested. One key detail (emphasis WCHD) -

On 12/30, 641 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Washtenaw County. This is the highest 24-hour case count we’ve ever had (by far).

Naturally, among their guidance is a recommendation to limit gatherings, etc.

With this in mind, public hours on Sunday, 1/2/2022 are cancelled.

Hopefully, additional data will be available over the next week. In the meantime, I'll take the opportunity to echo a statement from the Health Dept. - if you're eligible for a booster, please get it as soon as you're able.

Take care and hope to see you on 1/9,
Ian

Case numbers are very high: wear a mask in public & limit gatherings

The Health Department will be closed on Fri, 12/31 and will reopen on Mon, 1/3. Have a safe and happy New Year!
On 12/30, 641 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Washtenaw County. This is the highest 24-hour case count we’ve ever had (by far).

We’re seeing the impact of the Omicron variant and we should all be layering up prevention strategies:

➡ Wear a well-fitting mask with multiple layers in indoor public spaces.

➡ Get vaccinated if you haven’t and get your booster if you’re eligible.

➡ Limit gatherings and stay away from others if sick.

In response to rising flu and COVID cases, the state health department (MDHHS) issued a public health advisory emphasizing the importance of wearing masks in public. Public establishments should implement masking policies and encourage compliance. People who are not fully vaccinated or who are immunocompromised should avoid large crowds or gatherings. This MDHHS advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
COVID-19 vaccines are our best tool against the Omicron variant!
  • If you're eligible for a booster, get it now. It's becoming clear that immunity can wane after getting vaccinated, so boosters are important! If you're 16+ and got Pfizer or Moderna, you're due for a booster six months after your 2nd dose. If you got J&J, get your booster two months after your initial dose.
  • Have some time before you're eligible for a booster? Plan ahead and book your future vaccine appointment now so you're ready to go!
  • If you're not vaccinated, get your vaccine ASAP. In October, unvaccinated people had 4.3 times the risk of testing positive and 13.2 times the risk of dying from COVID-19 compared to people who were fully vaccinated. (MDHHS data, source: https://bit.ly/3EebS8F)

Our prevention guidance remains the same with the Omicron variant. Get vaccinated/boosted. Wear a well-fitting mask in indoor public spaces. Follow isolation or quarantine guidance as needed. Limit or keep gatherings small, and test before gathering, if possible. Stay away from others if you have symptoms.

Updated isolation & quarantine guidance

We have updated our general quarantine and isolation to align with the CDC’s newest guidance. We’ve included additional WCHD recommendations to further limit spread of COVID-19.

We're updating our website and existing materials with this newest guidance. Please note we’re working on updating school guidance – this guidance here is for the general public.
“It’s disappointing but not unexpected because we know that omicron is more transmissible,” said Washtenaw County deputy health officer Ruth Kraut. “We also know that over break, many people get together with friends and family. You have Christmas and then we’ve got New Year’s, and then people are traveling. In some ways that’s kind of a perfect storm.”
