Common Ground

of Eastern North Carolina

May 28, 2012

Dear Local Food Supporter:

Many residents of our community experience hunger daily and have little access to healthy, affordable food. Common Ground of Eastern North Carolina, a new, all-volunteer nonprofit based in Kinston, is working to change this situation by building an organic community garden and orchard in east Kinston, near the people with some of the greatest needs.

You may have heard or read in the Free Press about our recent successes in receiving grants to fund our ambitious project to transform five abandoned acres in Kinston into an attractive neighborhood park and community food resource center where residents can learn to plant, grow and prepare healthy food for their families.  These newly received funds will allow us to purchase a badly needed heavy-duty tiller and will fund the establishment of a mixed fruit and nut orchard in the fall.

All the funds we have received to date are restricted. That means they can only be used for the very specific purposes for which they were requested; we cannot use that money for general expenses like water bills, liability insurance, recycling containers and contracted services. We are asking you to help us build upon the successes of our grant applications and recent Zumbathon fundraiser to generate additional much-needed funds.

Our goal is to raise $1,500. That’s 60 donations of $25.00 a piece. This will allow us to purchase additional implements needed for our new garden tiller and to continue the work of bringing additional outside investment to our community.

Our need is immediate and urgent. Please send your tax-deductible donation by July 15, 2012, to PO Box 1121, Kinston, NC, 28503.  You may enclose your donation with a copy of this letter.  We will send you a receipt for your donation with the proper tax deductible information.

 Best regards,

Jessica Seymour & Julian Pridgen

President and Vice-President

Common Ground of Eastern North Carolina, Inc.

P.S. Your donation will help us to build a unique resource for our community where children and their families can enjoy the outdoors, develop better eating habits and become more self-reliant.
