Analysing Sentences: An Introduction to English Syntax by Burton- Roberts is an exceptional text for the student of English grammar. Like many of its predecessors, Analysing Sentences is an excellent introduction to the study of language, particularly as it applies to the study of written English. In this concise, clear-cut manual, Dr. Roberts combines classic linguistic techniques with modern approaches to understand language usage. Analysing Sentences is extremely helpful in teaching students the differences between pronouns, nouns, adverbs and verbs as well as the roots of complex words and their derivation. Analysing Sentences also teaches students how to construct proper sentences by using correct grammar, proper tense, and word choice, as well as how to avoid committing these mistakes.

Dr. Roberts begins Analysing Sentences with a wide overview of grammar. He explains the three major rules of grammar and the role of the subject in each rule. The text then goes on to explain the various aspects of language such as tense, tenses, modalities, and elliptical phrases. Analysing Sentences also introduces the reader to various models of grammar. An example of one model is followed throughout the text to illustrate the logical development of sentences, as well as the role that verbs have in them.

Following the introduction, the text goes into more detail about the major forms of grammar. Analysing Sentences devotes a chapter to discussing the topic of tense and modalities, discussing and giving examples of uses of tense in both ordinary and creative writing. The book then goes on to introduce the reader to the various models of grammar, including cause-effect and object-agent grammars. Finally, the book concludes with a short chapter analysing common errors in grammar.
