The premise of the novel is compelling, especially in the first few chapters as the reader slowly becomes immersed in the magical realm of L'Exil Selon. I particularly enjoyed the engaging tale of Julia and her relationship with the local mage guild. Her sudden turn of personality and responsibilities didn't take me by surprise, but rather prepared me for what was to come.
I particularly enjoyed the detailed description of how L'Ecola was born and spent her early years with her foster family before she was taken away to serve her duties as a mage. My main characters, meanwhile, had very defined roles and relationships. Julia's human guide, Thrax, was a likeable and powerful mentor figure who helped the young woman prepares for her future as a fully fledged mage. In particular, Thrax showed a good knowledge of the language of the elves and went a long way toward helping Julia overcome some of her shyness and reluctance to talk about her past.
