Hi - I am developing an app using commcare - some users will be using the app on a mobile and others will be using it on an android simulator on a laptop.  The android simulator that is recommended in the commcare documentation is called bluestacks, and is very good! the only problem I am having is that to move from one question to the next you have to swipe the screen, which on a laptop you cant do. has anyone bumped into this problem before? how did they get over it?

Thanks!

Hi Laura,

Clicking, holding, and moving your cursor to the left or right should register as a swipe event on the screen with Bluestacks (though sometimes it can be finicky about the speed and length of the swipe). If this isn't working with your track pad or the motion's too difficult then using a mouse would probably be your best option.

Best,
Will

Hi Laura,

We do recommend bluestacks as a good tool for demoing CommCare applications: https://help.commcarehq.org/display/commcarepublic/Demo+CommCare+for+Android+on+your+Computer

To our knowledge, it has not been used as part of a project's ongoing workflow, so this is uncharted territory! One word of caution is that we don't actively try to ensure compatibility with bluestacks, so we can't guarantee that CommCare applications will continue to work well in bluestacks going forward.

If you are interested using CommCare on a computer rather than a phone, check out CloudCare, our web-based version of CommCare:https://help.commcarehq.org/display/commcarepublic/CloudCare+-+Web+Data+Entry

However please note that CloudCare is part of the Pro software plan.

Thanks,
Amelia

Thank you Will and Amelia for replying!

Will - Yes, after some research, clicking and swiping seems like the only option... Its just a little awkward! but as you say - it will be better with a mouse.

Amelia - Thanks! I did see cloudcare, but there isnt enough in our budget to go pro, sorry!. The laptop version of the app is MAINLY for demoing as you say, but some people who dont have an android want to see it -  so i had to create a how-to for bluestacks.

thanks a lot guys!

Hi Laura,

I know Bluestacks is currently 'free', but I would also highly recommend 'Youwave' as an emulator. We were using Bluestacks for access to whatsapp on a computer, but it used to take forever for Bluestacks to load. Youwave loads up in about a tenth of the time. Granted, it costs $20 (once off licence), but when Bluestacks leaves beta testing it will probably cost too, and you don't have to comply with a weekly download of silly apps.

Damian,

Thanks for your reply! - You wave certainly looks a lot better than bluestacks, cheers. The problem is that it will be on a few different computers, so $20 suddenly turns in to a lot more times by 10 or 20! My original problem has been solved so i think i will stick with blustacks for now, crossing my fingers that it wont cost very soon.

Thanks!

Hi, everyone,

Just wanted to chime in that I have also struggled with swiping on bluestacks, but just discovered that if you push control + left or right arrow key you can easily move from screen to screen. At least it works on my PC.
