I have placed my Jandy Aqualink project on my web site, www.the-gordons.net.  One of these days I will bite the bullet and figure out the nuances of GitHub.

It is my understanding that there are other pool control systems (besides Jandy) that use the same serial protocol and commands. The project should work for them with little or no change.  The project is two way and table driven. the configuration table describes the pool equipment and how to deal with feedback.

I have included a simulator written for the PC (with source code - VB6) that can be used to test/evaluate the project with out having the full Pool control system available. The simulator can be modified fairly easily to simulate other serial bidirectional devices with simplistic protocols and command sets.

Thanks for sharing Barry! GitHub is definitely a great service, recommend it highly for sharing these sorts of projects.

Hey Barry,

Do you mind if we put a link on our Wiki to your page so that people can easily find this solution in the future?

Aaron.

For those looking to integrate with a Jandy, it has been general practice when connecting the Aqualink via rs-232 to a control system:

1. Use an opto isolator on the rs232 bus to protect your com port. They have been known to get damaged. There's a bunch out there. I've used this one:

2. Hard reboot the Jandy serial interface DAILY. Usually at 4AM. Physically run one leg of the power supply thru a relay and kill power for 30 seconds and then re-apply.

It'll save you a lot of service calls(or frustration if its your OWN system)...

The opto-isolator is good advice.  I have used one from Black Box model 9SPOP2.  I am not sure if they're needed if you have the Jandy surge suppression kit installed.  I put one on since I live in central FL which is the lightning capitol of the USA.  Before I installed the Jandy Surge Suppression kit (there wasn't one in the beginning) I went through three (3) serial adapters, all under warranty.  Jandy then came out with the surge suppression kit specifically for the RS485 lines between the Serial Adapter and the RS Wall control unit.

I have never shut down the Serial Adapter other than when I do routine maintenance and my pool system is over 11 years old. My entire home control system rides on a UPS and the house has central surge suppression.  The house has a standby generator that cuts after 20 seconds of power loss so I rarely suffer from power induced problems.

The Jandy connects to a PC running Homeseer.  It interfaces via an 8 port IO-networks USB to serial adapter. The adapters originally cost hundreds of  $$$$ but as technology advanced they were taken en-masse out of data centers and appeared on eBay for $25.00 each.
