Hi

Just getting round to controlling my Sony VPL-500ES that has built in ipcontrol. Ive got several other things already being controlled via IP but this this seems massively over complicated from the IP control document that sony puts out...

I know thats for the 1000 but I'm assured they are all pretty much the same. Its actually very hard to find that document around the net.

That seems like an absolute minefield of difficulties compared to controlling a Denon AVR for example.

The main thing I need to do I turn the unit on and off, anything extra would be a luxury but I guess if i get that far it wouldn't be that hard to go further.

Heres what I have learned so far after hours and hours of trolling around the net:

You can't use the direct PJtalk command to turn the unit on but you can send the IR command to make the unit power up via IP but it seems you can turn it off again via a direct command.

Apparently you have to keep sending an alive packet to the projector if you want to keep controlling it. (Not sure what this means)

A new command can't be sent to the projector until a response is received from the projector to confirm the previous command was completed, or it might mean the end of the world.

I can control the projector with sonys own: Projector Remote for IOS

It was not very simple to get that working, I had to change the PJtalk community name to get the app to see the projector. But in doing so found out the projector hosts a webpage on my network for setup.

The app can power on the projector just fine so they are either doing via the IP>IR route or they have another way.

I might be teaching people to suck eggs here, but hopefully not.

Someone please help me I have little idea where to start with this.

Thanks

Lee

Sony has gotten very proprietary and difficult to deal with if you want to do things like IP control.  That is why I stopped buying Sony equipment.

Try a command like this to turn project on - note the documentation says you need to send it twice if the projector is in standby mode:
\x02\x0ASONY\x00\x17\x2E\x02\x00\x00

And to turn it off:
\x02\x0ASONY\x00\x17\x2F\x02\x00\x00

Change "SONY" in the command to match the 'community' setting in your projector (default is SONY).

This is just a guess, based on the documentation. Don't have a Sony projector handy to test against.

TCP port 53484

Try disabling the TCP timout in the projector settings, otherwise use the Heartbeat TX properties and RX properties to send some command that will always return the same response, to keep the connection alive.
Note that if you have it set to "always on" in your system settings in your project, then the system will automatically reconnect after timeout anyway, even if you dont use any heartbeat.

Thanks Jarrod they worked perfectly. I tried disabling the timeout but it killed all communications with the projector even from the app so have left it at 30 and it seems to work perfectly.

Just starting to go through the other commands now that are on there app to put in to my remote incase i ever needed them.

Thanks

Oh and yes Barry I would love IP control of my PS4 but I don't think thats going to happen any day soon.

Hi Jarrod,

I stumbled upon this thread while looking for simple explanation on how to turn on Sony projector via ethernet, they really used a thermonuclear device to kill a fly as they often do.
Problem I am having is that I am setting up a presentation room using TouchDesigner to control most of things that need to be controlled (Lutron, matrix switchers etc.) and I don't seem to be able to talk to projector (part of the problem is that i have very limited access to site and I don't own sony projector to play with ). Say I send commands you just posted to projector IP, can I expect it to work or is there some extra magic I should be performing ? If yes would your software be able to deal with that and is it possible to run it in command line ?

Thank you in advance

Matiya

I have the protocol manual for the Sony VPL VW1000ES projector. I gave up with Sony components a long time ago as they took a position that was unfriendly to people who were trying to write handlers for their components.  I have attached the document (a pdf file)
