Chapter 1 of the Martin and Nakayama (2010) reading discusses six reasons for studying intercultural communication: The-Self Awareness Imperative, The Demographic Imperative, The Economic Imperative, The Technological Imperative, The Peace Imperative, and the Ethical Imperative. Define one of these imperatives, and then give an example to support the imperative. Do you think this imperative is a good reason for studying intercultural communication? Why?
Self-awareness imperative raises the awareness of political, economic, and historical systems though learning intercultural communication. No matter people run a business, study, travel, or do any other social activities in other countries, it may encounter intercultural problem. People may gain benefits or challenges by handling intercultural problem well or not. So, it becomes more and more important for the key of success.
Here is an example about a political situation in China. The noted pastor Liutong, form River of Life Christian Church. He went to China Shanghai three times for propagating Christianity, but he was caught by shanghai’s police three times, although there are a lot of churches in Shanghai. The reason of pastor Liutong’s fail may be that he didn’t aware of China is a country, which has political restriction and prohibit the propagation of religion, although it develops fast and the politics in China seems more open than before.
Therefore, it is a good reason to study intercultural communication because understanding other culture can avoid and reduce the conflicts among different people from different cultures.
