Four components of language are Semantics, Syntactics, Pragmatics and Phonetics.
In the book, they talk about the role of metaphor in understanding intercultural communication, but I think in an other way, we must understand the culture to understand the meaning of metaphor as well as how to use it rightly. For example, when I learned English in school, I was a good student and my friend wasn’t. However, when we communicated with foreigners, he seemed to interaction better than me, he knew the metaphor and slang. I think that’s the reason he could communicate so naturally. My friend said he just learned English through movies. When he watched movies, he could know the culture and the right way to use the words. With the same words of the same metaphor, in my culture, it could be funny talking, but in other, it can be considered offense.

The four components of language are semantic, syntactic, pragmatic and phonetic. Metaphors not only help people to understand something about the culture itself, but also other cultures. For example, in English, green-eyed means jealousy, but in Mandarin, we use red-eyed to express jealousy. In most Asian countries, red means enthusiasm, positive, lucky. However in the west countries, red always connect to horrible, blood. One simple word or phrase may have totally different concept in different cultural. So metaphor plays an important role in understanding intercultural communication.

I think, you want to understand the culture from different countries, we
need to fully understand its language, for example, studying English, we should
understand its Semantics, Syntactics, Pragmatics and Phonetics. Because English
and Chinese that their Syntactics is very different.

Metaphor
is a way to describe easily and indirectly. However, in different culture people
use different things to stand for the meaning. For example, in America, people
use chicken to stand for somebody who is timid. Compared with American, Chinese
use mouse to stand for somebody who is timid. Chicken stand for somebody who is
trustworthy and always on time in Chinese culture. Why they take chicken as
different meaning? Maybe in American culture they don’t keep chicken, because
they always keep cow and horse and sheep instead of chicken. In contrast, Chinese
keep chicken to get eggs and take them as an alarm clock to wake them up in the
morning. Therefore, Chinese don’t think chicken is good and trustworthy rather
than timid. So we can understand the differences between two different cultures
by understanding these differences in metaphor.

You want to learn a new language, you must understand its culture. Because that the different cultures will reflect the different languages. For example, in America, you can’t speak “fuck you or shit” to someone, because it’s too terrible and impolite. But in china, you said that it’s ok. Because that the point of making American and Chinese angry is different. So, you understand different culture is more important to know its language Semantics, Syntactics, Pragmatics and Phonetics.
