When I was really young (in the 1970's) my Mom would buy me packs of
Whitman "repackaged" comics from the supermarket. To my knowledge the
only one that survived those early years is Action Comics# 482 cover
dated April 1978. It was a "To Be Continued" story, so I had to wait
until I was an adult [almost 30 years later] to find issue 483 to find
out how the story ended.
The first comic I ever went out and purchased myself at a local
newsstand (Algeo's Pharmacy) was Action Comics# 527 (http://
www.comics.org/issue/35981/?style=default) cover dated January 1982.
From that point on I was hooked.
I branched out and purchased many different titles from Marvel, DC and
others over the years but the character Superman has always been my
favorite.
I've followed him off and on over the past 30 years. (Throughout the
1980's I gave up on Action comics and just collected the "Superman"
title.)
Recently (within the past 5 or 6 year) I was trying to fill in the
gaps in my Superman collection. Then I had the idea that it would be
fun to expand this search and to attempt to buy every issue of the
original Superman series from issue#200 (Cover date October 1967)
through then end of the original series issue#423 (September
1986)...I'm one issue away from fulfilling that goal. I'm so close
that I just started reading the early 200's issues. Issue#200 & 201
were great, but issue #203 was a giant sized Bizarro Superman with
reprints of Bizarro stories from the late 50's thru the 60's. I only
made it a 1/4 of the way through when I had to put the book down. I
can take some of the "silly" nonsense golden and silver age Superman
stories but the Bizarro ones just bore me to tears. (Maybe I'll go
back and try again if I'm ever in the mood for some Bizarro Superman).
My real passion is Golden Age comics.
I try to get a copy here and there when the price is reasonable.
As for modern comics, I don't pick up any one series on a regular
basis.
I have been getting the Marvels Project which is fantastic. (Epting is
one of my favorite artists these days)
Criminal is good whenever they come out with a story line.
Incognito was excellent. I hope they bring that back.
The Lone Ranger has been good, but M.I.A. as of late.
My kids and I read Archie Comics.
Whatever is on the shelves at my local comic book shop that peaks my
interest and looks decent I'm willing to give a shot.
-Loran.

I bought my first comic book at Mt. Lebanon Pharmacy after school in
1986. That issue was Uncanny X-Men #207. I can still vividly remember
the next two comics I bought from the same place, they were X-Factor
#5 and Dakota North Investigations #2 (who would have thought that 20
years later Dakota North would reappear in the Marvel U?) I pretty
much bought comics off of the spinner racks at pharmacies and grocery
stores whenever I could. Finally in the early 90's, an actual comic
book store, Time Tunnel, had opened up. By that time, I had a job
after school and I was making enough that I started my first
subscription.

I stopped collecting comics somewhere in the mid-90s because I
couldn't afford it (car, rent, girlfriend, etc), but around 2000, a
friend opened up a new comic store and I offered to help, working on
Saturdays. That's when my collection started up again and it hasn't
slowed down since.

I can’t remember the first comic book I read. It may have been one of
my brother’s Richie Rich comics or Mad magazines. I do have a fond
memory of buying Marvel’s “Master of Kung Fu” issue #43 so that would
have been August 1976. Other first favorites of the time were Ghost
Rider, Werewolf by Night, and the Hulk. I was a die-hard Marvel fan
throughout my youth and moved onto Tomb of Dracula, Daredevil, Moon
Knight, Power Man & Iron Fist, Avengers, and the X-Men until I quit
comics around 1984. My freshman year of college 1986 marked my return
to comics. Hey, it was 1986, the best year of comics ever. I’ve been
reading comics since. If it’s got pictures and words, I’ll read it.

As far as collecting, I would love to complete my run of the
“Incredible Hulk” someday and I love Marvel Silver and Bronze age
comics. I recently stopped buying new comics and I hope to move some
of those funds to collecting older books.

Thanks to the local library, I read a lot albeit I’m always a few
weeks behind the curve when it comes to current comic events. My
comic shop is Phantom of the Attic in Oakland, near the Pitt and CMU
campuses.

okay this is all about my first comic book:
http://www.audioshocker.com/2009/03/12/the-eternal-comics-question-my-mystery-and-my-discovery

as for collecting, i actually don't call myself a comic book collector
-- i call myself a comic book reader. i gave away my entire collection
recently. DanG and Scotty know what i'm talking about!

but oh man! favorite character? SHEEEEET! that's tough!!! it changes
all the time. i would say i don't have a favorite character per se...
but rather favorites from certain areas. for example, my favorite DCU
hero is Aquaman (i also dig Supes and Steel). my favorite X-Men
character is a tie between Storm and Prof X. my favorite Avenger is...
ummm, uhhh, i guess in terms of being "on the team," my fav is Cap,
just cause he's great on the team. but my favorite other Marvel heroes
are: Havok, War Machine, and She-Hulk (among many MANY others).
