Hi Everyone,

I am doing a research project on electricity usage on the ComEd Real Time Pricing Tariff structure. I lived in Chicago two years ago and was on RTP program, but I am curious to hear your current thoughts. I would really appreciate anyone who has a few minutes to answer the questions below:

1. What is your opinion of the alerts from ComEd? Do the alerts influence your electricity usage?
2. Are the alerts regarding the Current Price or Capacity Events or both?
3. Do you feel well informed during a Capacity Event?
4. Are you also enrolled in Load Guard?
5. If you have been enrolled in Load Guard for over one year, have you noticed a reduction in your Capacity Obligation charge since enrolling? Or have you only noticed a lower Effective Electricity Price during summer months?

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer. I've been analyzing the ComEd tariff structure and the PJM market for awhile now. Also, please feel free to email me your responses if you don't want your response to be public at david.c...@gmail.com.

Thanks,
David

As background I've been on it for almost 12 years and have saved 32.5% on my bills and over $3600 over that period according to my last monthly statement.  Also been on load guard all that time although rarely invoked.  I live in the far NW burbs in farm country.

1) The real time alerts don't impact my usage much because i have learned to just not use AC during the peak hours of 1 pm to 7 pm.  (House is well insulated with large shade trees protecting the west wall also.)
2) just get current price.
3) yes, get both txts and emails plus now that smart meters were finally installed about a yearc ago and I purchased a real time interface to my computer to the meter so I can see my real time load minute by minute.
4) yes
5) my capacity obligation has definately gone down over the years but i think its because I've learned to play their fame and simply shut off my high demand equipment such AC, washer and dish washer during typical high demand hours.

1. What is your opinion of the alerts from ComEd? Do the alerts influence your electricity usage?
I don't get alerts, so they do not influence my usage.
2. Are the alerts regarding the Current Price or Capacity Events or both?
Neither.  I used to watch the current price, but it got to be too much work for not much additional savings.  I get enough savings by just programming the thermostat higher in the afternoons in the summer and not worrying about it.  My energy costs are always lower than the standard rate.
3. Do you feel well informed during a Capacity Event?
Not real well informed, but in general they are associated with extreme temperature days which the local news weather forecast is pretty good about predicting.  Sometimes people will post PJM predictions to this email server the night before a predicted peak.
4. Are you also enrolled in Load Guard?
No
5. If you have been enrolled in Load Guard for over one year, have you noticed a reduction in your Capacity Obligation charge since enrolling? Or have you only noticed a lower Effective Electricity Price during summer months?
I have already had a very low capacity charge for about 12 years due to keeping the A/C set high in the afternoons in the summer.  Load Guard is not necessary for me.

1.  Alerts from ComEd are far and few between and therefore are not effective and when they do come they might effect my behavior.
2a.  alerts regarding the Current Price are on the website line graph
2b.  Capacity Events  - 5CP's from ComEd or PJM are non-existent awareness due to extremely poor disclosure.
3.  see 2b above
4.  Load Guard yes - is not being tripped when there are 5CP events - feel that is intentional by ComEd to raise RTP customer's capacity obligation and cost to cover their required payments to PJM.
5.  I have already had a very low capacity charge for about 12 years due to keeping the A/C set high in the afternoons in the summer.
Mine = Capacity Charge 0.50 kW X 6.49090 = $3.25

RTP customer 126 months - $1,567 savings - 38.3% saved on ESC-BES
Have Nissan Leaf home charging for last 54 months - $24.35/month avg - 3,125 kWh cumulative to date - 4.2 miles/kWh life time $.0225/mile to drive.

Capacity charge: 0.32 kW x 6.49090 = $2.08

Lifetime savings (141 months) 37.0%
