Did you know that the adult human body has 206 bones? This means there are a lot of things that would require musculoskeletal imaging or image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat pain. Our fellowship-trained MSK physicians specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system.

At Delaney Radiology, we offer a wide range of imaging services and image-guided procedures. Our providers perform several types of minimally invasive, image-guided radiology procedures for specialized diagnostic or treatment purposes. The following exams and procedures are used to diagnose and/or treat musculoskeletal disorders and injuries:

If you are suffering from joint pain, please talk to your doctor to determine if one of these procedures might be right for you. Always remember that you have a choice in your health care and can request to have your imaging and image-guided procedures performed at Delaney Radiology. Our staff of board-certified radiologists, physician assistants and trained technologists will ensure your imaging is high quality and cost effective every time. We want to help ease your pain and get you back to doing the things you love most.

The Musculoskeletal Radiology division brings significant depth of expertise to the treatment of diseases or injuries of the joints, bones, muscles and spine in both adult and pediatric imaging. The Musculoskeletal Radiology division of the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging is one of the leading divisions for Musculoskeletal Radiology in the United States.

Musculoskeletal problems can be the result of various circumstances, ranging from work accidents and sports injuries to genetics and lifestyle choices. Some of these problems include osteoarthritis of the knee, osteoporosis of the bones, and many other joint or muscle issues. To help lead patients toward an effective recovery, the Musculoskeletal Radiology division at UCSF provides imaging and treatment for injuries relating to sport and occupational injuries, hereditary dispositions, tumors and arthritis of the bones and other joints.

The UCSF Orthopaedic Institute Imaging Center at Mission Bay is designed to serve patients who need specialty care in joint replacement, sports and dance medicine as well as performance diagnostics, rehabilitation, prosthetics and orthotics. The Orthopaedic Institute provides services for referring doctors and patients including orthopaedic imaging studies, diagnosis, treatment, interventions, and outpatient surgeries.

The Orthopaedic Institute allows experienced sports medicine and orthopaedic physicians, therapists and radiologists, who are experts in musculoskeletal and orthopaedic imaging, to serve patient needs and physician consultations in an integrated fashion, under one roof. ESNR ESSR European Course on Spine Radiology, 3rd Cycle Module 1 plays a vital role in the European Diploma in Neuroradiology. By bringing together the expertise and knowledge from both fields, we aim to provide you with a comprehensive and enriching learning experience.

This new educational initiative is a must for all MSK experts. Offered to society members 100% free of charge, this platform features lecture and webinar recordings plus educational tips and tricks provided by various subcommittees. Access links are provided via the membership activation/renewal emails and for logged-in members at the ESSR website.

The Musculoskeletal Radiology Section provides interpretation of all imaging related to the musculoskeletal system. These include radiography, fluoroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

The section also offers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the musculoskeletal system under ultrasound, CT, and fluoroscopic guidance. Procedures include arthrography and arthrocentesis, tenography, treatment of calcific tendinopathy, ganglion cyst aspiration, therapeutic and diagnostic joint injection and aspiration, peripheral nerve blocks, bone and soft tissue tumor biopsy, tumor ablation.

We specialize in the imaging of diseases of a vast array of conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, including but not limited to sports medicine, oncology, joint replacements, rheumatology, trauma and minimally invasive interventions.

There are already plenty of good books out there on introductory musculoskeletal radiology. Why did I write this syllabus? Because, it seemed to me that most of these books were doing a great job of telling one about diseases, but not how to approach their diagnosis. Most books tell you the names of lots of disorders and the findings you see in each of them. This is handy if you already know what disorder a patient has, and you just want to learn more facts about it.

So, take these approaches with a grain of salt. They are not Revealed Truth, but they have worked for me and for many of the residents that I have taught. I encourage you to add knowledge from other sources to what you learn here, throw away the obvious nonsense, and end up with The One True Way to approach these problems, which will, of course, be your way.

The Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University is one of the most rewarding and sought after in the country. We have one of the highest musculoskeletal MRI volumes with more than 100 joint MRIs scanned per day, including many sports-related injuries. We are the only MSK division in the country providing imaging interpretation for four professional sports teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers, as well as the Philadelphia Ballet and various college and high school athletics programs. Our division also performs all MR imaging and ultrasound-guided exams at an institute in South Philadelphia specialized in core muscle ("sports hernia") and hip injuries. It is one of the elite sports-related surgery centers in the country, treating professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey and soccer players from all over the United States. Our fellows are directly involved in the care of athletes on a daily basis and participate in weekly sports medicine conferences. The MSK staff travels to Indianapolis every year for the NFL combine to interpret imaging and evaluate Philadelphia Eagles prospects. MSK ultrasound is provided every year at the Phillies spring training and we have a research collaboration with the US Olympic team.

Our division has one of the busiest and renowned MSK ultrasound sections in the country, which performs over 30 diagnostic MSK US studies per day, many of which are accompanied by US-guided procedures, including steroid injections, tenotomies, PRP injections, calcific tendinosis barbotage, flexor retinaculum release for carpal tunnel, trigger finger release, etc. Fellows participate in MSK US clinic and perform several US-guided procedures every week.

Aside from the sports medicine training, our fellows are exposed to a high orthopedic oncology tumor volume with an average of about 15 CT-guided tumor biopsy procedures per week, including spine and bone marrow biopsies. Additionally, several musculoskeletal soft tissue lesions are biopsied under ultrasound each week. A weekly musculoskeletal radiology-orthopedic oncology interdisciplinary conference is held in the reading room each week to review tumor cases, guide management, and plan biopsy approaches for upcoming patients.

In addition to tumor biopsies, we have a robust MSK interventional procedure service. Several vertebroplasties, radiofrequency ablations (mainly osteoid osteomas), and advanced joint arthrograms per month round out the extensive procedure experience of our fellows.

The MSK staff are strongly involved in and take leadership positions at the major musculoskeletal imaging societies. Visit the MSK Division for general information including the staff. Our division is actively involved numerous research activities; review recent publications.

Radiologists, Orthopedists, and Sports Medicine practitioners interested in spending time in our section to experience our MRI readouts, use our digital learning resources, and observe musculoskeletal procedures are welcome to apply for our Visiting MSK MRI Fellowship. If interested, please contact Lauri Friedenberg via email or call 215-955-2716.

A visiting MSK US fellowship is also available. Visiting fellows have the opportunity to participate in the daily activities of our MSK ultrasound clinic by attending reading sessions and observing procedures. Fellows are granted access to our academic resources including a library of recorded classroom courses covering most aspects of MSK ultrasound.

Jefferson holds itself accountable, at every level of the organization, to nurture an environment of inclusion and respect, by valuing the uniqueness of every individual, celebrating and reflecting the rich diversity of its communities, and taking meaningful action to cultivate an environment of fairness, belonging & opportunity.

The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Radiology section is comprised of board-certified radiologists with particular interest in orthopaedic and emergency radiologic diagnosis, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions.

In addition to inpatient services at Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH) and The Vanderbilt Clinic, we provide radiologic services for the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute and multiple area walk-in clinics. We are responsible for providing and coordinating radiologic services for the Emergency Department at VUH, a Level I Trauma Center, with a receiving area that includes Middle Tennessee, Northern Alabama and Southern Kentucky. Procedures performed by our section include joint-related procedures, image-guided biopsies and thermal ablation of benign or malignant neoplasms.
