The Cold War may be long over, but espionage is making a comeback. Every day brings new details of spy rings in capitals, and commanders-in-chief welcoming the aid of foreign intelligence to win elections, but on the big screen the thrall of spooks has never been long dormant. For instance, this month brings the release of Anna, the latest Luc Besson-directed action movie about women spies who can kick some serious ass. Only this Russian supermodel turned superspy does it all herself, like the best of them. As played by real-life model Sasha Luss, the eponymous spy comes to Paris in this movie claiming to be working a fashionable job, yet the business she is really in is dressing to kill.
Indeed, directed by David Leitch (one of the two helmers on the first John Wick movie), the picture reveals Theron handling dizzying action and stunts on par with that earlier film in extensively violent long-takes. Thus she becomes the ultimate badass spy: brutal, brazen, and blonde.
Sometimes the best spies just fall into the role. Sydney Bristow thought she had a job as a CIA agent working for a special unit called SD-6. When she discovers that SD-6 is not part of the CIA but rather the evil Alliance of Twelve, Sydney sees an opportunity. She offers her services as a double agent to the (real) CIA and then soon comes to find out that double-agent-ing runs in the family.
The sprawling world and mythology of Alias requires a lot of its lead character. Thankfully, Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow was always up for the task. Sydney is a chameleon, always fitting in to the scenario that the spying situation requires. Then, should that situation turn south, she is also blessed with some superior combat skills.
SALT (2010) - When Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) became a CIA officer, she swore an oath to duty, honor and country. But, when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy, Salt's oath is put to the test. Now a fugitive, Salt must use every skill gained from years of training and experience to evade capture, but the more she tries to prove her innocence, the more guilty she seems.
RED SPARROW (2018) - Prima ballerina Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) faces a bleak and uncertain future after she suffers an injury that ends her career. She soon turns to Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people to use their minds and bodies as weapons. Egorova emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow after completing the sadistic training process.
ZERO DARK THIRTY (2012) - Based on a true story, Zero Dark Thirty follows the decade-long worldwide manhunt for Osama bin Laden, as the terrorist leader occupies the resources and attention of two U.S. presidential administrations. Ultimately, the work of a dedicated female analyst (Jessica Chastain) that proves instrumental in finally locating bin Laden. MATA HARI (1931) - In Paris during World War II, Dutch exotic dancer Mata Hari (Greta Garbo) secretly moonlights as a German spy. Using her feminine wiles to seduce French and Russian agents into bed so she can uncover top-secret information, Mata Hari is a primary target of the French Spy Bureau's Dubois (C. Henry Gordon). When Mata Hari falls in love with one of her intended targets, the dashing Lt. Rosanoff (Ramon Novarro), Dubois uses her former accomplice (Lionel Barrymore) to bring her down.
NOTORIOUS (1946) - In order to help bring Nazis to justice, U.S. government agent T.R. Devlin (Cary Grant) recruits Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman), the American daughter of a convicted German war criminal, as a spy. As they begin to fall for one another, Alicia is instructed to win the affections of Alexander Sebastian (Claude Rains), a Nazi hiding out in Brazil. When Sebastian becomes serious about his relationship with Alicia, the stakes get higher, and Devlin must watch her slip further undercover.
TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997) - Media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) wants his news empire to reach every country on the globe, but the Chinese government will not allow him to broadcast there. Carver doesn't take no for an answer and plans to use his media empire to fuel flames of war between the Western world and China. Thankfully, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is on to the insane news tycoon and travels to China to stop him with the help of Chinese secret agent Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh).

She plays a teen criminal who is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering policemen during an armed pharmacy robbery. Her government handlers fake her death and recruit her as a professional assassin. After intense training, she starts a career as a killer, where she struggles to balance her work with her personal life. She shows talent at this and her career progresses until a mission in an embassy goes awry.
THE 355 (2022) - CIA agent Mason "Mace" Brown joins forces with a rival German agent, a cutting-edge computer specialist and a Colombian psychologist when a top-secret weapon falls into the hands of a group of mercenaries. Together, the four women (Jessica Chastain, Penlope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, Diane Kruger, and Lupita Nyong'o) now international spies, must work together to stop a terrorist organization embark on a breakneck mission to save the world while staying one step ahead of a mysterious figure who's tracking their every move.
SPY (2015) - Get ready for belly laughs in this action-comedy. CIA analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) has spent her entire career as a desk jockey, working hand-in-hand with dashing agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Using high-tech equipment and a hidden earpiece, Susan is the guardian angel who helps Bradley avoid danger. However, when Bradley is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), Susan wrangles her way into her first undercover assignment to help capture Boyanov and avenge Bradley.
Netflix have unveiled a first look at Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx in their new Netflix action-comedy, Back in Action. During a 2024 preview of the many new shows and movies hitting the streaming platform this year, Back in Action clips see Diaz and Foxx kicking ass as two spies who end up back in the thick of it. You can check out the footage at around the 2:10 mark in the video below.
Diaz came out of retirement to star in the movie alongside Foxx, and while the production has been hit with many delays - most notably for Foxx's medical emergency last year, there were also several reports that Foxx's on-set behavior had also been causing issues. This is something that Diaz spoke out about in an interview last year.
At the time, it was reported that Diaz had been caught in the crossfire of Foxx screaming and shouting at people, as well as firing three people from the movie in the midst of his rant. However, it seems that this was perhaps not the case, as Diaz has now explained.
"Jamie is the best. I love that guy so much. He's such a special person, and he's so talented, so much fun. We have so much fun on the set with him, and he's just a professional on every level. I really hate all of the things that were being said about our set. You just want to scream at the top of your lungs, like, 'What are you talking about?'"
There have been several reports that the movie will finally be released sometime in 2024, but so far Netflix has given no indication as to exactly when. In the meantime, Jamie Foxx has been one of a number of celebrities to have been caught in the middle of historical claims of sexual harassment. The claims, going back to 2015, have been refuted by Foxx, and there has been no suggestion that the release of Back in Action has been impacted as a result.
