Dear Families of Columbia Heights,

Drs. Anna Greenwald and Elissa Newport from the Georgetown MedStar Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery, and Dr. Catherine Stoodley from the Developing Brain Institute at Children’s National Research Institute, are recruiting volunteers for a study investigating emotional prosody (the ability to recognize and express emotions in tone of voice) and social communication in children who had a stroke around the time of birth. Children ages 7-17 who did not have a stroke serve as a comparison group. Your child may be eligible to participate in this study!

The study includes cognitive testing, questionnaires, and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. In total, our assessments take about 5 hours to complete. This can be done in one long or multiple shorter study visits, depending on what works best for your schedule. To make it easy for participants to come to Georgetown, we provide free parking or a ride with Uber to and from study visits. Participants receive approximately $150 for completing the study, or $25/hour for cognitive testing and $50/hour for MRI scanning, and we have built time into our testing schedule for participants to chat with the study team about science in general and the brain in particular.

If you and your child are interested in learning more about this study, please see the attached study flyer for more details and fill out this online form to get in contact! You can also reach out to the study coordinator, Calvin Engström, at peeps.ge...@gmail.com with any questions.

Warm regards,
