Hey folks,
Founded in 2000 by
Columbia alum (and 1996 Ethnic Studies hunger striker) Ai-Jen Poo, Domestic Workers United [DWU] is an organization of
Caribbean, Latina, Asian and African nannies, housekeepers, and elderly
caregivers in New York, organizing for
power,
respect,
fair labor standards and to help build a
movement to end exploitation and oppression for all.
There is a meeting coming up this
TUESDAY at 7pm downtown about the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights campaign that is being pushed through state government to establish fair
labor standards for domestic workers in NY State, including a living
wage, health care and basic benefits. The Bill of Rights addresses the
exclusion of domestic workers from most basic labor protections,
provides recognition for the workforce as a real workforce, and
establishes specific protections to address the isolation and
vulnerability of domestic workers to abuse and mistreatment.
Ai-Jen would love to get Columbia students involved and this is a great way to start getting involved with NYC grassroots community organizations. Please contact me if you are interested!!!
