I hope your week is going well -- I have a Mac woe to ask about.

The players: An Optoma DLP projector that is hooked into our MacBook
via a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. We're running OSX 10.5.8.

The Problem: When the projector is hooked up and everything is setup
and ready to go, the screen just blanks or as apple calls it
"intermittent flickering." It shows the screen correctly, goes out for
2-3 seconds, comes back, goes out for 2-3 seconds etc. It doesn't make
any difference whether the monitors are mirrored or not.

What I did about problem: I went to the Apple site and found out about
a firmware update from 09 [that they didn't inform us about =???]
Anywho here's the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3492. [Also,
here is a MacWorld article discussing the firmware update:
http://www.macworld.com/article/139442/2009/03/minidisplayport.html] I
did the firmware update and went through the install.

Firmware update results:
It fixed the problem for about ten minutes...and then the flickering
started all over again. AND not only that, but the picture isn't as
clear. I can't find anything to substantiate it, but I almost think
that the update did something to lessen the high definition picture.

By the by - It isn't a faulty cable because I've tried other cables
and it isn't likely the adapter because we just bought another one and
it did the same thing.

Have you guys had to deal with this problem before? Do you have any
suggestions or ideas? I'm really in a pickle because we need to use
the projector for an upcoming presentation. I don't really want to go
buy a PC just to run a presentation you know. (Can you buy a PC and
run a virtual Mac by chance?)

Thanks for any light you can add to the subject,
One aggravated Mac user.

Have you tried different resolutions?

There is an outside chance its the connection at the Mac side.

Of course I have only seen this in the MiniDV connection of older
MacBooks, and MacBook Pros. I have never seen it with DisplayPort.

If you can get other 2nd monitors working, its the projector, not the
connection.

Ha. Thanks for the levity there guys.

Jason – you were spot on! I went back and changed the projector’s screen resolution via system preferences > Display. When I reduced the resolution on the second screen (the projector) the flickering stopped - Yay! Also, as the resolution was reduced, I noticed the picture was clearer and the images and text looked grand and lost the pixilated look with 90s bitmap flair.

Thanks again!

:D
