Hey all,

in Italy 3d-printing parts for these specialized respirators has proven life-saving, apparently: https://www.fastcompany.com/90477940/these-good-samaritans-with-a-3d-printer-are-saving-lives-by-making-new-respirator-valves-for-free

Has anyone looked at talking to local hospitals about this, it seems this would be a useful way for makers to try to help out a bit?

If you have access to 3d-printers and are interested in helping out, I've reached out to doctors in my network. If you ping me I'll reach out if anyone contacts me and asks for help with some part.

Stay safe!
Jake

Heard back from a doctor at a VA hospital; she said they are about to hit a brick wall on protective equipment, mainly masks and eye protection.

Does anyone have access to a laser cutter and would be interested in trying to make these? I can buy the materials: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4155735?fbclid=IwAR1NHO6ZtfNWbUvZJZN_U6xCWgPkVHfNU1u1JoZFnT1k2FJ3nWyIh7JCevM

I think it seems really cool and would be a good excuse to fix my printer

Ok, so I misunderstood the doctor I was chatting with yesterday. Her VA hospital is good on eye protection, what they are running out of is masks, gowns and gloves.

If I hear back from anyone about anything they could use 3d printing for, I'll let you know.

The serious approaches to ramping production of masks I've seen are running into what I guess is the key problem for N95 masks - the material for the filters ("meltblown polypropylene") is unavailable globally.
Eg. the issue isn't making the masks themselves, but making filters.

Meanwhile, this document tracks global efforts to produce open source medical equipment that is safe and works:

And this documents some groups working on this stuff, though a lot of the links are bad:

Konnar,  are you or dad aware of an effort that Bill Moore with the Columbia STEM Alliance is working on in conjunction with law enforcement and University hospital to 3D print face shields?

The shield was designed by Prusa (https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25857-prusa-protective-face-shield-rc2?fbclid=IwAR3giCf1rPHxyTiIVt1Q8uI9-eUpzk7Thr93dBrlmHVetZoxyTJgNxS8EKA)

If someone could reach out to Bill and find out if we can help, that would be great.  I'd be happy to laser cut acrylic sheet if we can find a supply.

There are several mask designs that
Use cut up masks as filters.
This allows a single mask to be stretched.

Yep! That’s us. We have a design approved by the fire department fit test as n95 like.  We’re working on producing face shields. I’m still working on getting the plastic for the shields as well as getting in touch with MU for materials. We haven’t figured out how we want to organize our efforts or the process for working with others but a process is in the works today.  I’ll reach back out to you when I know more later today.
