RS Latch with bathroom lamps...

I often go into tangents about how simple electronics are and the concepts are TINY, but cumulatively make more advanced gizmos (10 core Westmere with 2,600,000,000 transistors...)

So I showed a friend of mine, here's an inverter, and with just the ability to turn off a signal and get a composite signal we can make AND gates and NOR gates, and showed how a RS nor latch works,

and I went to the bathroom and ran back into his room with his bathroom nightlight lamp and said "THIS WILL WORK!!!" all excitedly - and we searched for a second one, and screwed them together in opposite directions through a piece of cardboard, and pluged both of them in, then using a flash light to "set" or "reset" my memory latch. (in a dimly lit room I should add)

I got the idea of the lamp because I've been making memory arrays minecraft redstone... (I know.. nerdiest of nerdly things to do...)  honestly, I'd like to know if there is a good logic simulator for linux or perhaps the browser, I started to write one, but I fail at understanding the concepts and logic involved to make logic - all I really want is something that is on the scale of just inverters and basic gates, just to play with.

Any thoughts?

But I have to wonder how far you could go with those night-lamps. NOT
and NOR are there, so by DeMorgan's laws you can have AND and OR.

I started to envision a clever laser block electronics building kit, like minecrafts redstone logic, but physical objects, the laser emits when not triggered by another laser, 5 input (or'd) targets on each block 1 output laser. would be fun (buildin 10ms or perhaps selectable delay on trigger, so you could see retriggering glitches with LED's representing the laser output on the cubes
