Homemade Relays.

I've been sort of obsessing over the idea of making some homemade relays, and building a 4 bit counter, I KNOW this would be a tremendous undertaking, but its going to be a project with my nephew, we built some coat hanger solenoids and put glass jars in front of them, wanted to show him more and more complex things.

normally I'd reference some old tinkerer's build of a relay, but .. I'm not finding a lot of information, I want something easy to build and relatively reliable, time to build it be damned.  (classic three desired options, pick two)

looking for 4PDT but DPDT would be fine as well.
