Hi everyone,

After a long summer break (including a few months of fall), we're finally back with more public astronomy!! We're super excited for all the astronomy events we have lined up for the 2023-2024 academic year, and we hope you're excited as well :)

This year's Public Lecture & Stargazing series is kicking off next Friday, November 17, at 6pmJoin us in Pupin Hall 301 to hear from Columbia Astronomer Jennifer Mead, who will be giving a public talk titled "Tales from the Stellar Graveyard: The Ghosts of Stars Past":

"Even on the large scales of the universe, life and death are intricately intertwined. In this spooky post-Halloween story, we will talk about how astronomers analyze light from the distant universe to unlock the secrets hidden in the tombs of dead stars and how, from the ashes of these stars, new life emerges."

We'll start the evening at 6pm with some astronomy trivia, followed by Jennifer's talk and Q&A. From 7:10-8:10pm, we will be outside stargazing on College Walk (weather permitting). In parallel with stargazing, we'll also be holding a small reception indoors to welcome all of you back to Pupin (hot chocolate may be present....)

The main event will take place in Pupin Hall 301. Signs will be posted to direct you to the lecture hall, and general directions to Columbia and Pupin Hall can be found here. Outdoor observing/stargazing will take place on College Walk, the portion of 116th street crossing through Columbia's main campus; we will walk down to College Walk as a group following the lecture and Q&A. Telescopes and binoculars will be provided by Columbia Astronomy (but you are absolutely welcome to bring your own observing equipment).

This event is free and open to all -- stay only as long as you want. If you plan to attend this event, please fill out the RSVP form at tinyurl.com/columbia-astro-nov17.

Looking forward to seeing you in Pupin Hall next week!

Very best,
Columbia Astronomy Public Outreach

Hi all,

For those who wish to watch the event remotely, we will be live-streaming on YouTube via this link: https://youtube.com/live/mPNK5MDzdmY

In other news, it's unfortunately too cloudy tonight to do stargazing. Keep your eye out for announcements of other public observing events at or near Columbia in the near future!

Very best,
