Often I get the Save/Discard prompt when I want to close a spreadsheet
that I have only looked at, and not edited in any way.

That seems an irritation but it is also a worry because if I had
accidentally changed a cell by being careless there would be no way of
telling.

Is there a reason, and can it be changed so the prompt only comes of the
file has been changed?

Do what will produce the desired effect, not what you think ought to produce the desired effect.

Which version of Fireworkz? Fireworkz or Firworkz Pro or Windows versin?

Discard should be when it takes the file back to whatever was previously
saved.

Could it be auto re-calc of the spreadsheet data?

A modified file on RISC OS has a little * in the window/title bar, to tell
you it's a changed spreadsheet.

In my case it's caused by a couple of cells that auto calculate from a
past fixed date to todays date and how many days have passed.

So even though I've not manually done anything to the open sheet, the date
and calculation has been automatically done.

Pro 2.30.1 RISC OS

Don't think there were any in the sheets that do it.

Yes. I can't remember whether that was there at the time or not. I'll
look next time it happens.

Don't recall it ever happening with Eureka in all the years I used it.

Current Pro version is 2.33 (16 Oct 2025)

There is a choice option to auto re-calc sheets

Yes, I have that turned on, but surely it should only be triggered if I
change the content of any cell. In the cases I was referring to I hadn't.
All I'd done was scroll around looking at information.

Yes, certain spreadsheet functions do cause recalculation of those cells
and their dependent cells on loading. Current date is a good example;
you would complain if it didn't recalculate!
